You'll never see "batman", "knifeman", or "rockman" when some is beaten, stabbed, or bludgeoned with a rock, but "gunman" just rolls off their lips and out of their pens and keyboards so easily and automatically.
Can you imagine the feedback if someone wrote "Batman Kills Joker in Bar Fight"? I bet even Jason Blair would have had trouble with that one.
