When the Times changed hands, the paper's first motto was "It Does Not Soil the Breakfast Cloth"--a subtle apology for the graphic anti-abortion, anti-prostitution Christian moral crusades of the paper in the era of Henry Raymond and Augustus St. Clair. That wasn't catchy enough so it was changed to "All The News That Is Fit To Print".
