talking a couple of feet of lead shielding

It's mass that does the trick, doesn't necessarily mean lead. Could be water, frozen pizza, chocolate, ice cream: tonnage counts. Still sure you don't want to go?

Oh, I'd go. The guy said the cheapest thing would be moon [dust/dirt]. Oh, how awful looking it would be.

Besides, the really thick shielding would be around a "safe" room for solar eruption emergencies. I'd probably make it
the sleeping area, just to minimize background radiation exposure.

Then, of course, there is that niggling problem of minimal magnetic poles.
