My belief is, that once these young men show a physique and aptitude for sports, their thinking days are over.

The grown-up coaches, principals, deans, athletic directors, agents, managers, etc, manage their lifes for them, provide them with the necessities and enough money for toys and drugs till they turn pro and the money spigot gets turned on.

Intelligence not required.

I was just wondering how a college athlete was able to drive around in an SUV......... When I was at Tech, (hundreds of years ago) it was very common for the local car dealerships to "loan" cars to the players.........but I think rules have gotten stricter and tighter since then........or maybe not.......

Rush, they wouldn't have any of this going on in Georgia now, would they?

Since when are college kids taking pistols to school.

Sheesh, times have changed since I was in college. We didn't even carry knives. There is a thuggery mindset out there that is a very disturbing trend.

I have a niece and nephew who are very recent Baylor grads, and might dispute your claim.

Can you tell me what you're basing your statement on so that I can ask them to verify it or deny it?

Hey, OWF, I've been reading all of this with interest. Baylor is like any other school in that you have some bad apples in with the good. There have been Baylor students who have exhibited well publicized criminal behavior in recent years. I have to say that the majority of Baylor students I meet are good kids, but the student body has a reputation in Waco of being spoiled, rich, self indulgent airheads sometimes with good reason. It's unfair to pin a general label on the student body, because the bad apples are the ones who get attention, while the majority of the kids are good and decent people. The City of Waco and Baylor have always had an uneasy alliance. The university is the city's largest employer and they are forced to scratch each other's backs. Recently there has been a great deal of controversy about the direction Baylor President Robert Sloan is taking the school. He has a vision plan to place Baylor in the top tier of universities nationwide and a mega $$$ building plan to go along with it. Lots of sniping and infighting among the regents, donors and alumni and accusations that Sloan is moving the school away from their Christian mission and mortgaging their future with the huge construction projects, etc. Not a day goes by that there isn't some new Baylor controversy in the local paper.

It was just so sad to watch the mom as she emptied her son's apartment. Really heartbreaking.

Hey, McLynnan, I was thinking about your being near where all this is taking place. Thanks for the local report.

Haven't you noticed that some freepers are expert at divining the character of everyone. The motives of everyone. Matters not whether they have facts.

Not only that, but right after he discovered his dog money was missing, he and his friend purchased guns... with MONEY?

However, I recall interviews with a local landowner who let Dotson and Dennehy target practice on his property and he said he met Dotson when he purchased a pit bull pup from him (the landowner). So where is this dog? Where/when did he get the money?

There are a lot of contradictions in the stories so far.

Apparently it doesn't even matter when we do have facts - or news reports. It's not like you are actually disputing any points posted.

Which claim might they dispute? My claim that I am not a Baylor grad?

I am not disputing or confirming any facts.....just that lately I have noticed a lot of posts declaring this person or that company or that college or entity is corrupt.

Whether or not a university paid for bus fare or clothing for a kid from a poor family does not make that university corrupt.

Sadly, the system is such that poor kids with talent are exploited and that is not confined to one school or one sport.

LeBron James mother was able to purchase a Hummer for her son before he graduated from high school and/or made a penny from pro sports.

There really is no answer to this dilemma and for now what is needed is prayers for the families involved.

It is a FACT that Dennehy's girlfriend was booted from her athletic program at another university because she had accepted cab fare from a Baylor coach to take her from Waco to the airport in Dallas - 100 miles - at the end of her visit with Patrick when no one was available to drive her there in time to catch her flight.
It is my opinion that this FACT is just the tip of the iceberg regarding violations... violations for which she had to pay a price, but did any Baylor coach suffer similar consequences? Well, we now have a team from Baylor's staff investigating the possibility of rules violations.

You're welcome. One thing I forgot to mention is that Baylor is in full court press jockeying for the George W. Bush Presidential Library. They've been buying up land all over the place in the Brazos River corridor for this purpose, and behind the scenes are pressuring the City of Waco to expedite plans for a riverwalk type development along the Brazos River to entice the President further. This would be a real boon to the local economy, and makes sense since the President's ranch is less than 20 miles away from the Baylor campus. Should they win the library there would be a "Texas triangle" of libraries with the LBJ Library in Austin, Bush, Sr.'s library in College Station and W's library in Waco -- all within a reasonably short two hour drive of each other.

Unfortunately, I suspect he landed in a corrupt athletic department environment. Baylor is not a hotbed of virrtue...

I'll ignore the sarcasm in your post, Valerie, and just tell you that this is the statement you made that I was curious about that I thought they might dispute. That's why I wondered what facts you had to back it up.

McLynnan, thanks for the info explaining the present situation at Baylor. My niece and nephew (actually, my husband's) are solid, dedicated Christian kids who graduated from Baylor within recent years, but I haven't been around them enough to have heard them discuss the overall moral attitudes at the University. I do know that they are dedicated Christian young people who are serving the Lord with their lives.

There are many 'Christian' schools that are no longer actively Christian, and I didn't know that this was the situation at Baylor now.

It sounds like they're having a number of problems because they have left......or are leaving...... their Christian values behind.

Is SMU mentioned as a competitor for the Library? I'd think they would have a shot at it with Laura's ties.

Thanks for fleshing out Baylor for freepers.

I have no bone to pick with Baylor in general.
My comments are based on the dodging and schmooozing and other smarmy behaviors I have seen from Baylor coaches and administrators ever since Dennehy's disappearance was first reported. As a former journalist I recognize the Cover Up Syndrome when I see it... and it first appeared weeks ago. The last thing these people wanted was scrutiny.

Yes, SMU is also going after the library, as is Texas A&M.

That is interesting. I thought W was going to share Bush Sr's library. A 2 for 1 deal. Guess I'm behind on that news.
