Just as many have predicted. Numerous GOP/Independent candidates on the right, only Davis on the left = Davis staying in office.
It doesn't work that way. Gray Davis's name will not be on the list of possible replacements for Gray Davis. If numerous rightist candidates split the vote that could of course help whichever leftist candidate runs to replace Davis. But it wouldn't help Davis per se.
What could help Davis, though, is that he could "run against Savage" by saying to Californians that if they recall Davis they might wind up with an unstable psycho for governor. This argument might be persuasive.
