I was just lisening to Medved debating Creationism with Athiests on the air. I found it interesting that while Medved argued his side quite effectively from the standpoint of faith, his opponents resorted to condescension and beliitled him with statements like, "when it rains, is that God crying?" I was reminded of the best (at least most amusing)debate that I have ever heard on the subject of Creationism vs Evolution, albeit a fictional setting. It occurred on the show, Friends of all places between the characters Pheobe (The Hippy) and Ross (The Paleontologist). It went like this...
Pheebs: Okay...it's very faint, but I can still sense him in the building...GO INTO THE LIGHT MR. HECKLES!!
Ross: Whoa, whoa, whoa. What, uh, you don't believe in evolution? Pheebs: Nah. Not really. Ross: You don't believe in evolution? Pheebs: I don't know. It's just, ya know, monkeys, Darwin, ya know, it's a, it's a nice story. I just think it's a little too easy.
Ross: Uh, excuse me. Evolution is not for you to buy, Phoebe. Evolution is scientific fact. Like, like, the air we breathe, like gravity... Pheebs: Uh, okay, don't get me started on gravity.
Ross: You uh, you don't believe in gravity? Pheebs: Well, it's not so much that ya know, like I don't *believe* in it, ya know. It's just...I don't know. Lately I get the feeling that I'm not so much being pulled down, as I am being pushed.
Ross: How can you NOT BELIEVE in evolution? Pheebs: [shrugs] I unh-huh...Look at this funky shirt!!
Ross: Well, there ya go. Pheebs: Huh. So now, the REAL question is: who put those fossils there, and why...?
Ross: OPPOSABLE THUMBS!! Without evolution, how do YOU explain OPPOSABLE THUMBS?!? Pheebs: Maybe the overlords needed them to steer their spacecrafts!
Pheebs: Uh-oh! Scary Scientist Man!
Pheebs: Okay, Ross? Could you just open your mind like, *this* much?? Okay? Now wasn't there a time when the brightest minds in the world believed that the Earth was flat? And up until what, like, fifty years ago, you all thought the atom was the smallest thing, until you split it open, and this like, whole mess o' crap came out! Now, are you telling me that you are so unbelievably arrogant that you can't admit that there's a teeny, tiny possibility that you could be wrong about this?!?
Pheebs: I can't believe you caved. Ross: What? Pheebs: You just ABANDONED your whole belief system! I mean, before, I didn't agree with you, but at least I respected you. Ross: But uh.. Pheebs: Yeah...how...how are you gonna go in to work tomorrow? How...how are you gonna face the other science guys? How...how are you gonna face yourself? Oh! [Ross runs away dejected] Pheebs: That was fun. So who's hungry?
Saying I'm not a conservative? Saying all I've ever posted are personnel attacks? Overgeneralizations about you - me that I take exception with !
Evolution is a personal attack !
If you don't believe God is the Creator - almighty ... it is impossible to be a catholic --- you are only fooling yourself !
And if you believe anything but the work of Jesus Christ can save you ... it is impossible to be a Christian --- you are only fooling yourself !
All other embellishment and spin is anti God and Christ --- liberal bias make believe !
I don't think you have enough character or principles (( to much flux - evolution )) to qualify for hypocrisy !

Interesting...
I wonder if anyone else wants to agree with the notion that expressing a scientific opinion constitutes a personal attack.
I wouldn't blame Darwin for monsters (Hitler et al) but there is an absolute universal morality --- that is accurately described in the Bible -- to which we are accountable.
Societies that reject this morality become horroific.
Societies that reject God soon reject this morality.
Questioning Genesis or pointing out contradictions it has with contemporary scientific knowledge is not rejecting God or His law.
Fair enough, but my position remains Christianity was never compatible with slavery and that the fact true Christians found themselves to be slaveowners only shows that Christians still must deal with the world and are still capable of sin.
I'm going to go on a limb and say that no true Christian was ever a slave trader.
To RWP: Thanks. We'll just toss you in the same agenda driven racist dust bin that nutballblue frolicks in.I could go on but I know when I'm wasting my time. The real challenge would be finding any ALS posts that aren't insult, spamming for his website, or at least off-topic. I notice that I still haven't made it off of July 10. Less than a day of ALS. But lets wander ahead a little bit to July 16.(No, "nutballblue" isn't gore3000.)
An interesting post, not from ALS:
Hmmm... How many threads were deleted in the last three days (while I was gone?)
The chain of replies from that one is amusing.
ALS on ThinkPlease's refusal to debate politics (Stalinism) on a thread about science textbooks:
I wasn't aware my opinions mattered so much to you. However, since you've turned down my attempts to draw you into a debate on science in the past, I will have to turn down your attempte to debate on politics on this thread. Unless, of course, you'd actually like to debate science."The first paragraph is actually ThinkPlease, quoted. The second paragraph is an ALS "translation." Twist and Shout.translate that: Evolution is neither science or politics, and I can't give a reasoned response to post #202, so all I can do is continue insulting the intelligence of everyone including my feeble attempt at one.
A revealling exchange:
dogbyte posts to ALS on not rejecting science. A reasoned essay.ALS makes a snide remark to Patrick who is urging evo restraint.
By the way, you have nothing to prove to me either. If you don't want to give your definition of science, that's fine since I didn't give you stats for homeschooling. I just love ticking you evos off - its give me pleasure.Whoops! That's exmarine, not ALS! Unpunished bad behavior seems to be catching.
A man hears what he wants to hear, and disregards the rest.
(OK, someone put in the Hokie Sixties Song Reference placemarker)
No true Scotsman doesn't like haggis.
I wonder if anyone else wants to agree with the notion that expressing a * scientific * opinion constitutes a personal attack.
Material atheist ideology is not science ... God created science and they don't attack - conflict --- only leftist ideology hate rhetoric does immensely !
Evolution methodogoly and politics is a blackout of objectivity and CONSERVATISM --- a whole lot more than an attack !
Actually, we state that scientific theories are superior to some folks interpretations of the the Word of God. There is a significant difference between this and what you posted. However, I'm beginning to dispair of certain folks being able to discern such nuances.
And, I don't attack "Bible believers;" I believe in the Bible. However, I have a sore spot for fundamentalists and their particularly narrow view of Scripture. Chalk it up to having grown up Catholic in the South.
(Loved that song.)
It's a very safe statement to make that those who wrote and voted on the 14th amendment never in their wildest dreams imagined that it could be used to throw the Bible out of public schools or remove a public display of the 10 Commandments.
Lie le-lie!
There's a famous one. Amazing Grace...
Before I get jumped on, the Stalin post is another recurring ALS theme but that's not the one ThinkPlease was refusing to fool with at the time. I confused the two.
