Gov. Gray Davis became the nation's first governor in 82 years to face a recall election, as California's secretary of state announced Wednesday that a Republican-led campaign once discounted as improbable had qualified for the ballot.

Davis, a career Democratic politician who was elected in a landslide in 1998 before his popularity plunged amid California's energy crisis and budget deficit, must face the electorate in 60 to 80 days, according to state law.

Some have said that it is happiness NOT to live in interesting times. Bustamonte is making his move-according to recent reports. Wonder if he will get Mexican support up to and including fighting in the streets?

But, all kidding aside, I am a bit concerned about some of the noises he's making, and wonder if anything can be done if he chooses to try a "palace coup."

I got my wife a nice Mini 14 when Greyout got hired. I figured he'd ban them soon. Glad I was wrong (but he still has 80 days).

Couldn't happen to a more deserving politician. Yes, I remember how they sneered and said we'd never get enough petitions. Hahaha!

Arnold's spokeman on KFI radio shot down the story that Arnold had decided not to run. He is still mulling it over.

If he does, he then takes responsibility for the deficit without the ability to blame the old guy. Its a lose-lose for him politically.

Thanks for that bit of ugly news. BTW, that would be a plurality ("simple majority" is 50% +1).

Break out the cards; we need the best single GOP candidate to knock out Grayout.

I am pretty certain the language is ambiguous enough that he could appoint himself. This isn't the exact verbiage, but it goes something like *if necessary* he can appoint someone (him). My guess is the 'if necessary' will be wildly contested if he invokes it. Please feel free to correct me if anyone has more specific information!!

I believe you vote ansentee in all elections. That's one reason for the 60 day minimum and a time retriction on candidate announcements.

So, it's too late for Doofus to resign and derail the process, right?
