Gov. Gray Davis became the nation's first governor in 82 years to face a recall election, as California's secretary of state announced Wednesday that a Republican-led campaign once discounted as improbable had qualified for the ballot.

Davis, a career Democratic politician who was elected in a landslide in 1998 before his popularity plunged amid California's energy crisis and budget deficit, must face the electorate in 60 to 80 days, according to state law.

Hopefully.

Anybody know the guy? I am worried he will run and then the conservative won't have a chance.

PRESS ADVISORY

State Senator Tom McClintock today filed papers with the Secretary of State to launch an exploratory campaign for governor, in the recall of Gray Davis.

Any idea what an "exploratory campaign" is??

Since the law states that candidates must file 59 days before the election, that doesn't leave much time for "exploring". Or is what he did an actual filing as a candidate?

DING Ding ding....we have a winner....the LINE INTEM VETO

"I was under the impression that McClintock, or whoever is governor, could use the line item veto to cut as many social programs as they want, thus bringing the Budget back into line"

You are correct. That's how George Deukmejian dealt with the Rat legislature. When the Rats refused to reform Cal-OSHA, he simply did a line-item veto of the entire Cal-OSHA budget! Guy had balls... wish HE would run...

Oh, that was McClintock saying that if there was but one Dem, the Pubbies should talk. THere will be more than one Pubbie on the ballot, almost certainly. If it appears that the Dem will win, then the pressure will be on the Pubbie in the way, behind in the polls vis a vis the other Pubbie, or per the polls not able to beat the Dem one on one, to drop out. Boy, the polls will be complicated. And there will be LOTS of internal polls.

I hope Gray Davis dropped a load in his pants when he heard this. He's scared enough of a recall that his cronies have tried all kinds of legal crap a la Gore to avoid a recall election.

Big time! Rats being run out of office is a scary omen for all of them and they don't want to see a trend develop.

You are right. I actually forgot that little detail -- that he could conceivably still not be voted out.

Californians need to elect a fiscal conservative NOT a social conservative. We need to open our eyes. Had we run Riordan, he'd be governor today.

Riordan was not a fiscal conservative alas. He wanted to double the California minimum wage for starters, and wanted near unlimited spending for the dysfunctional education system. There should be no limits if it is for the children he said. Riordan was fuzzy minded, ill informed, and in the early stages of senile dementia. He among other things confused the minimum wage law and fica taxes. Sad really.

Exactly, when a person files exploratory campaign paperwork they are actually filing the paperwork to run for a particular office.
