[history]
The boom in Indian casino gambling has sparked new scrutiny from the Bay Area to the nation's Capitol -- and fears among tribal leaders that the intense attention will hurt an industry that has lifted many of their people out of abject and historic poverty.

prompted a hue and cry from local officials, who say they have no authority to assure the project adheres to customary environmental regulations. By "customary" I assume they mean looking for some spotted worm that they can use to halt construction of runways, power plants, housing developments, office buildings, etc.?

I know Richard Blum has made some big real estate deals pursuant to the desert protection act. One wonders if he and his lady have some "special friends" in Las Vegas.

Two governors got there butt's kicked by the voters on Indian-sponsored initiative. Same will happen to Lady-Di. Check for here campaign contributions from Nevada interests ala Duekmejian and Wilson. Both of them railed against the evils of gambling while taking money from the big wigs in Las Vegas.

Was it in Rhode Island or Maryland that the governor had the Native American cigarette store raided? I never saw a posting on the TV news that said whether he was Democrat or Republican. Makes me suspect he is Democrat.

Actually, I think he's a Republican; I seem to recall that from a little clip I saw on FNC.

It was in Rhode Island. Narragansett Indians want a casino. They sold tobacco froma trailer on indian ground and the RI State Police raided it per order of the Gov. I do not know how it turned out. State police raiding federal indian land is quite an interesting thing.
The indian casinos are not the baby of the tribes. It is outside money, lawyers and organized groups using the indians to gain casinos throughout America. Look at Foxwoods in Ct. Doesn't it have an Asian owner?

The governor raiding citizens on federal land because he is 'losing' tax money smacks of treaty breaking.
