Police per NYC Residents (1:204) vs. US Troops to Iraqi's (1:154) Friday, July 18, 2003

The public safety-security situation in Iraq must be significantly more challenging than police control in NYC. Yet the ratios of troops to Iraqi citizens 1:154 is while NYC police to residents is 1:204.

There are currently 39,110 police officers per NYPD statistics. This is the total number of Police Officers, Detectives, Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains, Deputy Inspectors, Inspectors, Deputy Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, and Bureau Chiefs budgeted for fiscal year 2003. Based on the 2000 census New York City has a population of 8,000,000. That means that each policeman needs to manage 204 people.

Iraq has 24,683,313 citizens (CIA) and the US has about 160,000 Soldiers in Iraq. Therefore each US soldier needs to manage 154 Iraqi citizens.

Actually, since almost all of the trouble has occured in the center of the country I would say the people who need watching have a ratio of about 100:1

Bad comparisons.

New York City’s total area is 301 square miles - Iraq has 168,754 square miles.

NYC=130 cops/sq mi.
Iraq 1.05 US troops/sq mi

Either statistic makes my case in point in that we are not prepared to the challenge, that we have no choice but to face;

Former Defense Secretary William Perry on North Korea and the US drifting to war - "I think we are losing control" of the situation, said Perry, who believes North Korea soon will have enough nuclear warheads to begin exploding them in tests and exporting them to terrorists and other U.S. adversaries. "The nuclear program now underway in North Korea poses an imminent danger of nuclear weapons being detonated in American cities."

Former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger Caspar Weinberger's 1986 book "The Next War" was prophetic in its insights regarding the likelihood of involvement in North Korea and Iran. . Additionally Weinberger believes that we are militarily under-funded and the current concerns in Iraq support his contention. - "We've lost about 40 percent of the effectiveness of the military that we had when we won our stunning victory in the Gulf War. Just the Army... we had about 925,000 after the Gulf War, and now, at the start of the next war, we're down to less than 460,000. That's just one service. We've also had procurement holidays, not acquiring the weapons we need We've also lost substantial air and sea lift, the ability to move troops rapidly to where they need to go. We've also lost substantial arms capabilities because of these procurement holidays. These are not partisan statements these are sad facts."

Former CIA Director James Woolsey - "Our enemy is in this World War IV, why they're at war with us and (now) we with them, and how we have to think about fighting it both at home and abroad. First of all, who are they? Well, there are at least three, but I would say principally three movements, of a sort, all coming out of the Middle East. And the interesting thing is that they've been at war with us for years. The Islamist Shia, the ruling circles, the ruling Clerics, the Mullahs of Iran, minority -- definite minority of the Iranian Shiite Clerics, but those who constitute the ruling force in Iran and sponsor and back Hezbollah, have been at war with us for nearly a quarter of a century. They seized our hostages in 1979 in Tehran. They blew up our embassy and our marine barracks in Beirut in 1983. they've conducted a wide range of terrorist acts against the United States for something now close to a quarter of a century. The second group is the fascists and I don't use that as an expletive -- the Baathist parties of Iraq and really Syria as well, are essentially fascist parties or modeled after the fascist parties of the Õ30s. they're totalitarian, they're anti-Semitic, they're fascist. The third group, the Islamist Sunni, are al-Qaeda, are in many ways, going to be the hardest to deal with because they are fueled by oil money from the Gulf, Saudi Arabia principally. They are wealthy in and of themselves. they're present in some 60 countries and they are fanatically like the Wahhabis, who are their first cousins "
