Gadhafi: 'Straights' Don't Get AIDS

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi told a conference of African leaders Saturday that Africans who are "straight" need not fear AIDS, which is ravaging many countries on the continent.

Speaking through a translator, Gadhafi drew some laughter with his reference to AIDS only affected homosexuals.

He told the closing session of the eight-day annual African Union conference, "All you have to do is observe the rules. If you are straight, you have nothing to fear from AIDS." He also described HIV, the virus that causes AIDS as "a peaceful virus, not an aggressive virus."

Of the 42 million people worldwide infected with HIV, 29 million live in sub-Saharan Africa. , at the close of the eight-day summit,

Gadhafi added in his address to 40 African heads of state that they should also not "worry about tsetse flies and mosquitoes" - which carry malaria and sleeping sickness - saying they were "God's armies" protecting Africa from its enemies, apparently foreigners.

"If they come here, they will get malaria and sleeping sickness," he said.

Malaria kills 5 million Africans a year, while sleeping sickness - also known as African trypanosomiasis - kills more than 25,000 people in Africa a year.

I'm not sure. African AIDS is not the same set of diseases as Western AIDS. What little I have heard suggests that African AIDS is much more of a heterosexual disease, perhaps not even necessarily transmitted so much sexually.

Gay hating bigots? Uh okay. The man is ignorant. AIDS WAS spread in the US and Canada by a gay. If I'm not mistaken there are more hetro cases in Africa than anywhere else in the world. And if the ignorance continues, eg AIDS can be cured by having sex with a virgin; the raping of children, it no doubt will be the end of Africa.

Your post is right, but there is a certain element that will say that Qaddafi's ignorant statement is correc. See #8 for an example.

I know the AIDS dynamic is much different in Africa and other third world nations than America, but he'd be absolutely correct if talking about straight American males contracting aids sexualy.

This is really funny. Second only to the heat, the biggest shock upon my arrival in Libya in the summer of 1956 was the common sight of arab men walking along holding hands. I know it is a cultural thing, but it conjures up an immediate image in the recesses of my mind. After a year and a half in the country, I somehow avoided "God's armies of flies and sleeping sickness."

Point is, if you apply the same standards to homosexual behavior in the USA like liberals want to apply to fast foods, gm foods, and have applied to tobacco, homosexual behavior would be taxed at an enormous rate.
