A YOUTH who attacked a national youth soccer player with a knife near Boat Quay two years ago was yesterday found guilty of manslaughter.

The High Court jailed Norhisham Mohamad Dahlan, 23, for 10 years and ordered him to be given 16 strokes of the cane after he admitted stabbing Mr Sulaiman Hashim, 17.

Norhisham, who was arrested in June last year after hiding in Malaysia for a year, is the sixth person to be dealt with for the killing.

He and two others, who are still on the run, used knives to stab Mr Sulaiman.

In the early hours of May 31, 2001, Norhisham and seven other secret society members confronted Mr Sulaiman and his two friends, thinking he was from a rival gang.

Norhisham was the one who had asked them which 'gang' they were from, the High Court heard yesterday.

Mr Sulaiman's friends managed to flee but the promising under-18 soccer player was stabbed to death outside a pub in South Bridge Road, near Boat Quay.

In March, two youths who had originally been cleared of murder and found guilty of rioting by the High Court, were convicted by the Court of Appeal of causing grievous hurt to Mr Sulaiman.

Fazely Rahmat, 21, and Khairul Famy Mohamed Samsudin, 20, were jailed for seven years and given 12 strokes of the cane.

They had earlier been given five years and 12 strokes of the cane.

Fellow gang member Muhamad Hasik Sahar, 22, was given a life sentence and 16 strokes of the cane after being convicted of manslaughter.

He lost his appeal against the sentence in August last year.

Two youths who played relatively minor roles in the crime - Mohammad Fahmi Abdul Shukor, 19, and Mohammad Ridzwan Samad, 20 - were each given three years' jail and six strokes of the cane for abetting the gang members to riot.

Getting caned is a bad experience. I visited Singapore a few years back and had a cabbie explain the process. They bend you over a table, this guy comes out with a long bamboo reed and proceeds to give you some stripes across your lower back and backside. The taut skin splits pretty easily so they have to patch you up. Bad news, you can't lay on your back and taking a dump is a major problem because of the propensity for reopening the wounds.
