I think you are remembering some of S. Clay Wilson pirate strips that ran in some of the Zap and other underground comics of the late 60's. I don't remember Crumb doing Pirates but Wilson sure did a lot of Pirate and Biker strips (and created the semi-famous "Checkered Demon" character).

I sure miss the Checkered Demon, Flakey Foont, Fat Freddie, Tree Frogg Beer, etc. Thanks for the memories.
