I live in a very Catholic area. My Lutheran confirmation class graduated 5 kids while the Catholic CCD had something like 60 or so. People around here are very misinformed about protestantism. Over the years while discussing religion with people I've heard people say that they think...

• Lutherans don't believe in communion.
• Lutherans don't celebrate Easter
• Lutherans do celbrate Easter, but at a different date a la Eastern Orthodox.
• Lutherans don't believe in the Trinity.
• Lutheranism is a sect of Messianic Judaism. (That one's my favorite)

I have no doubt that a lot of people misunderstand other religions, but all I was doing was giving an anecdote about my Mother's innocent misperceptions of some hymnals.

It isn't like she was ready to go out in the street with a pitchfork and burn down the local Lutheran church.

I was raised a Lutheran in a very Catholic area (New Orleans) and I didn't hear any of that. The people that I knew cut right to the chase. What I did hear was that Lutherans will burn in hell.
