I suspect it is a fine line between and Tony Blair Democrat and a Tony Blair Republican.

You'd rather that Arafat's thugs had military parity with the Israeli army? Like most "old world/Cold War" strategists, "balance" is in and of itself the ONLY value.

Card needs to wake up and realize the leaders of his party are "Jacques Chirac Democrats."

On the subject of SF/fantasy authors, I might also recommend David Drake

Thanks. Will check him out. There are too many to read. And I agree with a previous poster that it seems the truly creative and thoughtful authors are writing in this genre.

...but he's intellectually lazy in his failure to address the great imbalance of conventional military power between the Palestinians and Israelis and account for it in his moral calculus.

Why don't you address the great imbalance between the wealth of Arafat's bank account and the poverty of the palestinian people?

David Drake also live in Chapel Hill, NC. I wish I had met him and OSC while I live there. C.H. has a hell of a good scifi bookstore called Second Foundation.

Drake is my favorite author for military scifi.

Holy Mackerel!

What a list. I had no idea he was more than a novelist. In fact, I was just introduced to "Ender's Game" recently.

Mega thanks for the post and the links!

Fortunately for America, most rank-and-file Democrats do not suffer from the abysmal moral stupidity of the current Democratic leadership.

Most Democrats know that there is a vast difference between nations that use military action to protect their citizens and "nations" that deliberately murder innocent civilians within the borders of their enemy.

Even if I accept that as true for the sake of argument (I don't actually believe it ) they still vote for the bas***ds so what's the difference? In fact, if what he says is true, it's even worse to know something is wrong and condone it by voting for people who believe it than it is to be a blind believer.

Wow! I haven't seen Card in about ten years and wouldn't have recognized him. He certainly has lost some weight since then!

OSC is an excellent writer and, in my (admitedly long-ago) experience, both an extremely nice man and an interesting conversationalist.

Good post!

That's because I cannot find a single leader in the Democratic Party who is capable of acting on the basis of what is right, rather than what will make our side win.

And this is where the Republican Party is headed, cheered on by a good many FReepers.

Wham! Out of the park. Too much truth for some. What demons dance on their empty altars?

It makes me ashamed of the Democratic Party that this seems to be the only moral process available to the party's leadership. I used to call myself a "Moynihan Democrat."

But now that he's dead, I'm reduced to calling myself a "Tony Blair Democrat."

That's because I cannot find a single leader in the Democratic Party who is capable of acting on the basis of what is right, rather than what will make our side win.

Come into the light..move to the light.

You'd rather pretend there are good guys and bad guys, when in reality, there are only bad guys and worse guys.

Keep it up! This is why you liberals will never gain power again. You're way too cynical and amoral.

So, are you going to explain how a disparity in weaponry changes the morality of the situation? If some guy is trying to shoot me with a .22, should I be less aggressive in my self-defense than if he was using a .45? Should I select less effective weapons myself in order to produce a more level playing field?
