Davis recall effort now at 389,337 signatures

By Erica Werner
Associated Press

The Republican-led campaign to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis has collected nearly 400,000 signatures, close to half the number needed to put it on the ballot, elections officials in California counties reported Monday.

Recall proponents have claimed they were well on their way to collecting the 897,158 needed signatures, but Monday's deadline for counties to report totals to the secretary of state was an important date for them to prove they actually were.

The submitted signatures were those collected as of June 16. Many counties said they'd collected thousands of additional signatures since then.

Recall supporters said the numbers indicate they will collect the needed signatures by mid-July and force a special election in the fall, when they believe they would have the best chance of prevailing.

"We're definitely on target," said Dave Gilliard, director of Rescue California. Gilliard estimated the group has collected around 900,000 signatures total, many of which have not been submitted.

The signatures turned in so far have not been verified as valid. Political experts say the recall drive should collect significantly more signatures than required to allow for a percentage likely to be found invalid.

Recall opponents said recall backers still have a long way to go.

"At some point the disconnect between the spin of the proponents and the reality of the reporting -- the actual verifiable reporting -- has to be called into question," said Carroll Wills, spokesman for Taxpayers Against the Recall.

Under the recall process, counties must report signature totals to the secretary of state every 30 days. Monday's deadline counted signature collections as of June 16. At the last deadline, in May, recall supporters reported only 18,590 signatures. The final deadline for signatures is Sept. 2.

The secretary of state's office declined to make the numbers public Monday, so The Associated Press contacted the clerk's offices of all 58 counties directly. Responses were received from all except Placer, Tehama and Trinity.

The total signatures collected as of mid-June by the other 55 counties was 389,337.

This recall isn't "Republican-led". Its as grassroots an effort as I've ever seen.

But it was dead until a republican put up the $$ to pay for the sig collectors.

Chris Cox and Tom McClintok are far more conservative than anyone in NY my friend. And let's not forget that CA gave America Ronald Reagan. No, we have some very conservative Republicans in CA, we just have more lefties at the moment

Thank God for Mr. Reagan, but that was over 20 years ago. With the influx of immigrants/illegals, the landscape has changed considerably over the past 2 decades... Then again, what do I know, I'm on the other coast, in the midst of libs.

I sure hope this fails... It could be disastrous for the GOP.
I agree. Davis will resign if they get the required number of signatures certified before the deadline.

Is that the latest talking point? See you anti recall types keep dithering and changing your story so often its just getting challenging to maintain what your logic is. Particuarly when my state is spending 10-15% more than it is bringing in, I am at a loss to understand what you out of staters really know that I am missing out.

Let me 'splain something for you. 40% of the recall signers are Democrates. Probably moderate, never listened to talk radio in their lives, believe that the GOP is racist, sexist, bigoted etc, and that FDR was the greatest Prez ever. Right now, their hatred, and it is HATRED for Davis-for you who don't live here, is limited to the Democrate Gov, not the party. Now try to follow me here. If Gray steps down (ya know, because you guys are privy to info on the CA Democratic Party we're not) and Lt Bustamante takes over, then this disaster gets linked to the Democratic Party, rather than Davis. Why do you think they are sitting on anyone with dreams of taking his job? They have no plan to get out of debt, other than huge tax increases, and Bustamante, or Feinstein, or any other Democrate does not want to be the chump that has to deliever that liberal bad news.

Conversely, the Republicans do have a plan in the form of Tom McClintock, I suggest you read it.

Issa's money only shot NOS in the recall injectors. If you don't think there isn't plenty of people and support(money) behind this recall then you haven't been paying attention. Dimwit's positive is at 27%. Heck the Dimwits don't even support the incompetent moron.

And State Senator McClintok has stated that it is too late to avoid the recall election even if the Dimwit resigns. But if the Lt. Gov. takes over then he will have a chance to turn things around. And if he fails then we will still have an opportunity to recall him

Good work kellynla, we gotta keep these out of staters informed of the truth, (see #23) since everyone from William Safire to "Republicans" in the state are trying their best to scare Republicans and spread seeds of doubt about every aspect of the beautiful Recall effort.

Keep up the good work, I know I will.

Thanks! It gets a little exasperating trying to educate the out-of-staters. LOL

I respect your opinion, and if I lived where you live I would probably be reacting the same way. But what if Davis resigns and Lt. Gov. Bustamante takes over? What has the recall accomplished? Granted, Davis isn't likely to resign but the pressure on him to will be tremendous. If I lived in California I would be supporting the recall effort, but from afar it seems that this could backfire on the GOP if they are not careful.

I understand what you are saying, but you simply are being too honest! You need to think like a Democrate. As I said on another thread, the Democratic party doesn't want Bustamante taking over, they don't even want Feinstein taking over. Their only hope of beating this recall is Davis remaining gov, if he is not, they could raise FDR from the dead and it would still be humiliating in their minds. Remember, you have to think like a Democrate, if he doesn't get recalled, he's done nothing really wrong. Stepping down like Nixon because of honor is an admission of guilt to a liberal.

More importantly, and I think the Democrates are ahead of the conservatives on this point; They understand that if a Democrate inherets this mess, the secret "tax-and-spend" platform of the Democratic party could be exposed. Right now, the 40% Democratic signers of the recall HATE Davis, they do not hate their party. If the Demos pull a fast one and put Bustamante in, or he wins after the Recall. THEY HAVE NO PLAN other than ballooning taxes to get out of debt, end of story, and they know it. A fiscal conservative is the ONLY hope of CA and most Demo and GOP voters are well aware of that. The next Demo will make it worse, and sinkhole that will be CA will be an Albatross around the Demos neck. Now its simply Gray's fault, and he can take the bullet while funding the unions, evironmental wackos, and NARAL and everyone on the left is relatively happy with the situation as it stands now.

Now this intrusive recall, its just messy up all the best laid plans, God Bless it.

Then the budget crisis and Dem mismanagement attach themselves to the Dem party in general, not to just Dufus. Dufus must go, pure & simple. If thine eye offend you, cast it out. Right now, the Davis recall is being fueled by emotion. Change must occur for the sake of change.

You need to think like a Democrat

That will require some powerful pharmaceuticals.

I see your points, they have merit..however let me give you an alternative theory/scenario.....first..Davis is incompetenet, he's hurt the state, and the people....so he needs to be removed...are you suggesting they should give him two+ more years to screw it up further?.....and the GOP successor has an out..because the Dem controlled Cal legislature will no doubt block most of his initiatives....so maybe this will energize the GOP throughout the state....the platform if easy..hey, California, you've elected nothing but Dems for years, and this is what you got...now, try something else...it might work

Yes. Not only that, I think Gov McClintock sitting in Sacramento (he's currently a State Senator and a total thorn in their side) would be very intimidating for the Leftists up there who last I heard accomplished only getting Transgendered Rights passed in the past year. They are hopelessly out of touch...now. Suddenly having a new Gov, entirely because of fiscal irresponsiblity could change their view. I think they might go along with McClintock once he was in power, they know DARN well all eyes are on them, and they are next.

Either way I think it will most certainly lead to an overhaul in the Legislature once the new Gov can't get anything done; look what happened to the Senate Democrates nationally. As I remember it, ALL the pundits were predicting huge loses for the GOP, since never in history had the ruling party GAINED seats. Last time I checked, Tommy Daschle was really mad about being painted as an Obstructionist.

You know, methinks about the only thing that would make this more fun would be if Gary Condit announced that he was running for Governor on the Dem side.....

Some out of stater was fear mongering about Al Gore coming in to do it. I think that clueless tax and spender would be an absolute blast!

You're exactly right, I get sick and tired of all the defeatist, self doubting California Republicans on here, reading their notes from Parsky and other RINOs, this is a great time to be a Republican in the State of California! There is so much potential for change and growth here its just a fun thing to live through.

I agree, and am happy for you, unlike NY, sign..where we elect Dems disguised at Pubbies, or RINOs....but Cal could, just couod be on the verge of something great....but you have to tear it all down..the GOP party machinery....and rebuild it, and stand for something....the state's economic potential is so huge....that a conservative, low-tax state government could make a real difference, and remember, of course, the penultimate goodie...if Cal ever trend GOP in presidential elections, it'll be 3008 before the Dems can even think about winning the WH

Ironically, the much lampooned California Republicans, or I should say the grass roots conservatives of California, are on the verge of reshaping the landscape of America-again, with a pork barrel spending revolt. I think it will reach the rest of the country.

I have optimism that a huge wave is cresting in NY too. At least it is a hope. It would certianly be nice if Shumer got beat, he has said some really STUPID things recently, thinking he was in a safe state, but I think 9/11 changed alot and his statement that the US troops were firing on woman and children in Iraq needs to haunt his reelection.

As for Hillary, I honestly think Rudy is running, and is going to spank her, bad. NY got suckered by a non-New Yorker, I don't think they'll be twice fooled.

As for Bloomberg...well, I don't know what to say about that.

what if Davis resigns and Lt. Gov. Bustamante takes over? What has the recall accomplished?

Bustamante only takes over, as acting governor, until the recall election this fall, the ballot for which will ask us to choose a successor. After the election, Bustamante returns to this Lt.Gov. seat. The recall will have accomplished the removal of Davis and the installation of a new governor (not necessarily Bustamante).

California Elections Code 11302. If a vacancy occurs in an office after a recall petition is filed against the vacating officer, the recall election shall nevertheless proceed. The vacancy shall be filled as provided by law, but any person appointed to fill the vacancy shall hold office only until a successor is selected ...

The Secretary of State today reported only 376,008 signatures for all 58 counties, fewer than the AP sum from 55 counties for some unknown reason.

NY is toast..both the city and the state...unlike Cal..we don't gave the underlying economic vitality to recover....W may pull out the state...and with Schumer also running..that'd be a lot of ticket splitting....but basically, I think it's a ploy to force the Dems to spend lots of money here...cause without NY they have no electoral college scenario.....

BTW..I'm pinging you on a vanity thread I posted a few days ago..hope you enjoy it....regards//
