"I'm not even sure I want Davis recalled, as these are tough times in CA and I want Davis to take the blame for the "solutions" to his ineptitude."
I'd lean towards that myself if replacing him with a RINO is the alternative. The 'Rats need to take the credit for the mess.
"But I'll vote for just about anybody else to replace Davis. Frankly, I'll probably check the polls before the election and vote for the most popular Republican."
Don't necessarily vote for the most popular person. Vote for the best person for the job.

"A pragmatic truth that fieldmarshaldj refuses to recognize. (((sigh)))"

Fortunately, judging from reading the last couple of CA recall threads, it appears to me, that CA Republicans are starting to realize that we can be pragmatic winners, or forever losers, and it's preferable to be pragmatic winners. Some learn from history, others refuse to do so, insisting on repeating the same mistakes over and over and over.
Also fortunately, some of those who are trying desperately to split up the CA Republican party, by attacking every candidate who would have a chance of actually beating the Democrats, do not live in CA and don't vote here.

I HATE to do this to y'all, but here are a couple of predictions, based on early indicators and analysis:
a. Grayout Davis will DEFINITELY be OUT as CA Gov come November;.... BUT
b. The next Governor will be Cruz Bustamante (following Davis' 11th hour resignation in light of polls showing he will be recalled by a 20-point margin.
Don't like to rain on y'all's parade, but right now, no Dems seem to be running - which further indicates the likelihood of the above option.
Yes, there will be satisfaction in getting rid of Davis - but let's not get our hopes up about getting a GOP-er in as Guv this year.
It ain't gonna happen. Not unless Davis decides to take the Dem party down with him (and you know they'll grease his palm to make him go away quietly.)
Cordially,
Al

I was surprised to find out that Arnold has a graduate business degree ( MBA?)
From a FoxNews interview of Riordan:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/930811/posts SNOW: Well, you've seen up close and personal the kind of divides within the Republican Party in California. And again, a lot of Republicans here in Washington say, oh, my, who can pull that party together? You appear to think that Arnold Schwarzenegger may be the guy.
RIORDAN: Well, Arnold, he is a moderate, but doesn't come across as a moderate and he is a strong businessman. He has a graduate business degree from the University of Wisconsin. I've been involved in business transaction with him and he is a super doer. And he has a lot discipline, the kind of discipline that politicians need.
SNOW: Do you think he's the kind of guy -- he's never run for office, although his political leanings have been well known. Do you think he's the kind of guy, A, who would run that kind of campaign throughout the entire state. And B, really could take the heat in a political campaign, where as you know things can get pretty ugly.
RIORDAN: I think he can. He's surrounded himself with the smartest staff people to help run a campaign. He is a very disciplined person. Certainly, you know, there are things that come from left field that you never anticipated in your life that just blow you aside. But I think he'll be able to take those.

"RINO, RINO, RINO, When are we going to wake up and realize a Conservative Republican will NOT be elected Governor in California."
Maybe because it's CRAP, CRAP, CRAP ! This defeatist nonsense doesn't reflect the reality.
"The demographics in this state have changed. All you have to look at is the last election. Not a single Republican elected to statewide office. Why? California is overwhelmingly controlled by DEMOCRATS!"
That same demographics load was claimed in the '60s. Only a RINO like George Christopher could take the state back from Pat Brown "they" said. Ronald Reagan was "too conservative" "they" said. It was crap. The candidate who won the MOST VOTES last November was the one who ran the most unapologetic Conservative race ! His name is Tom McClintock.
"To begin the slow crawl back to retaking the state, the Republicans must put up a Moderate (RINO) for Governor and build from there, with our eyes on the Assembly."
Have you not gotten the memo ? RINO Governors do NOT build numbers in the legislature and winning other statewide offices, they DIMINISH them. Take a look at Taxachusetts and Tennessee to see what has happened with RINO regimes. Look what RINO Pete Wilson did ! Were you better off after he left office ? All the gains were WIPED OUT !
"The Socialist controlled Assembly is the real problem IMHO."
Yup, and handing the keys of the Gov's office to a RINO who will sign off on the Socialist agenda is no solution to the problem. Tom McClintock is the remedy.

I profess ignorance of CA politics, having only moved here last year from God's Hearth (Texas), and hoping I will be able to go back after the military has had its way with our family.
I didn't know that Davis and Bustamante were political enemies. May I ask for a few details, please? My post was based on simple logical deduction, bereft of real-world factors such as you alude to.
OTOH, didn't The Torch resign so his arch-enemy Lausenberg could become (once again) Senator from New Jersey?
If Bill Clinton gives Gray a call, its all over.

"I didn't know that Davis and Bustamante were political enemies. May I ask for a few details, please? My post was based on simple logical deduction, bereft of real-world factors such as you alude to."
I think it's best exemplified when not long after they were elected, in '99 when Bustamante broke with him on Proposition 187, the measure that banned many public services for illegal immigrants. Davis wanted to see the case mediated when the courts blocked it and Bustamante agreed with the courts. Davis threw a hissy and took away Busty's parking space for him and his staff. Busty feels like Davis has used him all along so he can score political points with Hispanic voters. Their relationship has been very cool ever since.
"OTOH, didn't The Torch resign so his arch-enemy Lausenberg could become (once again) Senator from New Jersey?"
Torch didn't technically resign and the Lautencorpse wasn't technically appointed, he merely "replaced" him on the ballot in one of the most dubious judicial actions witnessed until this morning's S.C. decision on race-based admissions. Torch, of course, didn't like that one bit, but he also realized he wasn't going to have to deal with him, anyhow.
"If Bill Clinton gives Gray a call, its all over."
I'd imagine so, unless Gray has the cajones to tell Bill to mind his own bimbos.

11302. If a vacancy occurs in an office after a recall petition is filed against the vacating officer, the recall election shall nevertheless proceed. The vacancy shall be filled as provided by law, but any person appointed to fill the vacancy shall hold office only until a successor is selected in accordance with Article 4 (commencing with Section 11360) or Article 5 (commencing with Section 11380), and the successor qualifies for that office.
My interpretation is that Davis can't give his seat to Bustamante for the rest of the term. If Davis resigns, Bustamante only becomes acting governor until the recall election determines the successor.
