130+ in a 280-Z.

My best "official" speed was 167 MPH in a 55 MPH zone... Clocked by California Highway Patrol...

It was a 1969 Buick Skylark- with drum brakes, no cage. But it did have a pumped-up Big-Block Chevy and a Muncie 4-speed. It's amazing I didn't smoke a bearing, and become one with telephone pole...

Of course, the kind officers seemed impressed with the car, but not with the fact that I'd pushed it that far....

((((Sigh)))) Stupid youth.... :-P

Made good bucks in NC swapping in 454BBs into 4wd Blazers w/wiped 350SBs.

Flywheel, stock Chevy PU motor mounts and exhaust.

Chevy & other GM BBs drop into big'ol Jeep Wagoneers using a GM Chevy or BPO or Caddy THM400 tranny case & the AM GM THM400 guts.

Use an early Olds Variable-Pitch GM THM400 front pump and torque converter and put a toggle switch on the dashboard.

High & Low torque multipication on top of the High & Low 4wd transfer case.

Wow.

12 speeds fwd to use...

4 wheels smokin' off the line, a quick toggle touch and instant higher top end; a literal 5th speed.

Boneyard science from W-NC NASCAR mountain boys...

I saw a recent brake test where a drum brake equipped car took a quarter mile to stop from 100 mph. I am surprised you could haul that thing down from 167 before you got to Colorado.

Those big ol' Dodge interceptors the California Highway patrol used to have were good for about 150, but they didn't like to drive them that fast. Had a CHP officer as a neighbor once. Used to patrol the "Grapevine" (old Highway 99, later Interstate 5). The stories he told!

My guess is that they estimated your speed, or got you on radar.
