Coast Guard finds pilot's body, helicopter
Associated Press

PORT O'CONNOR -- The U.S. Coast Guard found debris from a helicopter that crashed into the Gulf of Mexico today and recovered the body of the pilot who was reported missing after he failed to arrive as scheduled at an offshore rig.

"Right now the focus is on getting the remains returned to shore," Coast Guard spokesman Rob Wyman said after the body was found about 30 miles southeast of Port O'Connor this afternoon.

Wyman said the pilot's identity was being withheld pending notification of his relatives.

The helicopter, a Robinson R44 owned by Tarelton Helicopters Inc., left Houston's Hobby Airport and was headed to an offshore rig in the Gulf. When the helicopter did not arrive, the Coast Guard was notified about 7 a.m. today.

A search was conducted along the helicopter's reported flight path and adjustments were made until the debris field was seen, Wyman said. Two Coast Guard helicopters and a jet from Corpus Christi, as well as an 87-foot Coast Guard cutter, assisted in the search, along with three civilian helicopters and the Civil Air Patrol.
