If true, where did the asteroid come from? I am under the impression that most, if not all, asteroids come from within our own solar system.

At work now so don't have time to research this.

Almost all of the space junk crossing earth orbit is from our own solar system. But material from nearby solar systems appears in our solar system as well and can end up on earth. However, I'm not aware of any present claims of finding intergalactic rocks.
