Ruben is really his first name, but he usually goes by his middle name which is Christopher. Aiken is Clay's mother's maiden name which he uses because he doesn't get along with his father.

As I understand it, it's Christopher Ruben Studdard, and he goes by his middle name (my dad did that - no problem). Clay took his stepfather's last name - he isn't close to his biodad, whose last name is Parker or something. I understand his stepfather passed last year, and that they had been very close. Both are understandable - it's not like the producers gave them new names...
