(I don't recall hearing complaints when Martina Navratilova ruled the courts. )

I remember that period of time. A lot of fans complained that why should they bother to play the entire tournament when everybody expects Navratilova to play Chris Evert in the finals?

The matches they played were quite spectacular. What also made it less boring was that they were from different countries and obviously respected each other but obviously wanted to beat each other. The hints and rumors that the winner between the Williams sister was agreed upon before hand were the most damaging. Based on future events (Serena beating Venus so many times), these rumors proved to be totally false.

I have no problem seeing the sisters in the finals every time because they're the best at what they do and because they're American. I may root for other top American girls to beat them in the semi-finals just because I like to root for the underdog. But you can bet that I would never root for a foreign player to beat them. I am so proud of them as I am sure Most US tennis fans are. Their father deserves a lot of the credit for their success, but his open bigotry is hurting them.

You know, Martina has complained that these two spend too much time on "other" interests rather than just tennis. One of them is designing a clothing line, the other is pursuing acting. It is amazing that they are able to do so much.
