"the chief opponents were Democrat Senators Sam Ervin...Albert Gore Sr., and Robert Byrd. Senator Byrd, a former Klansman whom Democrats still call "the conscience of the Senate", filibustered against the civil rights bill for fourteen straight hours"

I don't know if I'd use the word "credit". It was a major unconstitutional power grab by the federal government, and it's having a very deleterious effect on our society - no, not because "undesirable" people are getting a leg up, but because it's become a lawyers' treasure trove, and because it allows people to avoid responsibility for themselves: "You're not really firing me because I'm incompetent/have a bad attitude/can't speak English/etc.; you're firing me because I'm [fill in protected ethnic group here]."

Sam Ervin is one of history’s greatest magicians. Using a vendetta against President Nixon, he transformed himself from a segregationist Dixiecrat into a liberal icon!

It is highly debatable how positive any of this was/is.

We're also the party that freed the slaves... Lincoln was the first Republican President. He ran on a platform of freeing slaves.
And dems?
George Wallace was a Democrat.
Bull Conner was a Democrat.
Hollings was a Democrat.
KKK Byrd was the only modern day Klan officer to serve in the Senate and Byrd was a democrat...
And last but not least... MLK was a Republican...

Hmmm...I wish they had included a sunset clause. To be honest, the loss of “freedom of association” and the right to refuse service has set us up to have homosexual advocates destroy the lives of Christians.
Government, IMHO, should not have the power to order a business to provide a service to anyone.
