The then-19-year-old UA freshman who lost his eye from damage by a 'less-lethal' police round says he's happy the city was found 'more at fault than me.'

A jury awarded $765,000 to a former University of Arizona student who lost an eye when he was hit by a police beanbag round during the April 2001 riot on Fourth Avenue.

OK - let me get this straight - the thug participated in a riot, causes who-knows how much damage to property, and is shot with a "non-lethal" weapon in an attempt to bring the riot under control - that he was a willing participant in, mind you -=

And the fill get's 3/4 of a million bucks for his trouble?

Maybe the cops should have used lethal force????

Hello - any one heard of "personal responsibility"? This fellow brought the whole thing down on himself by participating in the riot. He deserved what he got. Now when he sees another riot starting, instead of thinking about a beanbag to the eye, he's going to see $$$ flash before his remaining eye.... He'll just remember to turn his head and close his eye...

A riot is not a spectator sport. If you stick around in the face of an advancing line of policemen in riot gear who are tossing flashbangs towards you, you deserve what you get.

First, I feel awful this person lost sight in one eye. That's not a fate I'd wish on anyone. Personally, I think the judgment was too high considering the student's responsibility in the matter. As soon as the police were involved, he should have hightailed it out of there. Engaging in illegal protests which block streets, taunting and provoking law enforcement, and sticking around when the cops using non-lethal force might be exhillirating- but it has consequences too. One juror said the judgment should have been around $100K. I think that sounds about right.

just to set the stage...
the radio announced this swine'e "not a windfall" at the same time the mayor (a putative republican) voted in a tie-breaker to extend tuscon city sales taxes for big ticket items... beyond the city limits....it would amount to roughly $800.00 added to the price of a new jeep....bought by people who do not live in the city (and do not have the financial foresight to riot)and not bought in the city...

the juxtaposition with the neecker..or pecker.. whatever his name is...


i cannot SEE how this fellow can look himself in the face.... but then again... perhaps it is a vestigial form of justive that he CANNOT....

And I might ask "How much did Johnny (the lawyer) get in this.. My kin are TPD officers in Tucson and they were worried that had this really gotten out of hand, a lot of folks would be in the ground.
