After reading through this thread I have just a couple of things to add:

1) The whites at this school are the minority. According to the stories I've seen the students are 55% Black and 45% white. (That leaves no room for gray!) Isn't the basis for all of the unique "minority" only activities to allow them to network, socialize, feel comfortable, learn their culture, etc. These activities all for the minority to become more successful (supposedly). If that is the case then the minority students at this school did nothing different than the minority students at any school.

2) A point about Dave's question regarding the difference between the Klan march and these students prom. One clear difference is that the Gov't allows the Klan march by issuing a lisence or permit. The liscence or permit wasn't necessary for the prom. Generally, from memory only, when I see the stories about Klan gatherings I rarely ever see statements from local or state politicians. Why should the Governor respond to this prom issue if we rarely expect politicians to respond to Klan marches?

Maybe politicians dont respond to Klan marches in the South but they sure did in the North where I am originally from. Politicians used to frequently speak out against Nazis and Klan members marching in suburban Chicago for example. Sorry your politicians either feel an affinity or ambivalence towards the Klan. Guess if you represent Stone Mountain...
