Why is it that everyone else has to supposedly be held accountable but the media never is?

An excellent question that goes to the heart of the problem. The media has enormous UNCHECKED power, and can destroy lives and careers with ease, without any consequences. Libel laws were once a check on media power, but along with so much over the past 40 years, they have been severely weakened. It is now very nearly impossible for a libel suit to succeed.

In addition, unlike "truth in packaging," "truth in advertising," negligence, and other grounds on which most corporations can be sued if they harm the public through lies or defective products, media corporations have virtually a blanket immunity from such lawsuits.

Maybe the whole thing was a rouse! The museum curators decided to fool everyone by making everyone believe the place was sacked and cleaned out. Produce crocodile tears, blame the US troops and your antiquities were stashed in some bombproof vault outside the city. Museum curators are business people. Mr. George needs GOOD PRESS coverage right now to get the tourist money coming in. I can see Mr. George and Baghdad Bob greeting their guest at the gates. The grand opening sign should say-"Rocking the Cradle of
Civilization." OH...the tall tales they will tell!
