I'm glad you changed your mind about Lott. I deplored dumping Lott at the time not just because of politics, but also because the vilification of Lott was another victory for PC, that tended to diminish the freedom of speech of all of us, so that we can't say what any protected group deems insensitive. Now the same thing is happening to Santorum, and a lot of people don't see that it is the same thing.

It isn't the same thing.

What Lott said was stupid and inexcusable for a politician who should have known better......whether he meant it or not. Santorum was making a statement on an issue consistent with the law of the land.

Two entirely different situations.

Clarification......what the RATS are doing is the same thing (of course, since they never vary their playbook), but the two situations are different.

What Lott said may have been stupid, but punishing him for it diminished the freedom of every one of us, and increased the power of PC.

No. Majority Leaders shouldn't make stupid statements that can so easily be interpreted as racist....rightly or wrongly.

He hasn't lost any freedom whatsoever, nor have we. (Are you no longer able to say Strom Thurmond was right to be a segregationalist in 1948 if you want to?....Of course not. You haven't lost your freedom to say what you want to).

And Lott can go on saying the same thing if he wants to as well, but only with the risk of losing more power. Power, position and freedom are not the same things. You can lose the first two, but it doesn't mean you've lost the last.

Can't the same be said about Santorum?

Plus, I think you're seriously underestimating the power of PC. A private citizen can certainly suffer serious harm (like losing his job) for saying what ultrasensitive sorts deem to be racist. And the same situation is developing for what can be deemed to be homophobic.

The difference still remains, aristeides.

Lott said something stupid, PC or not. I don't have a PC bone in my body, and I just about fell over when I heard what he said, and then what he said the next day and the next. It took him a week.......and a rightfully strong statement by the President....for him to even realize what he had done, and THEN he went on BET! Stupid.

Santorum, on the other hand, was clearly stating what was the law of the land regarding 'privacy' and the homosexual issue. He is not apologizing for what he said because there is no need for apology. What he said is a legitimate side of a legitimate legal debate.

Santorum said nothing wrong. IMO, Lott did.

I repeat.....they are different situations.

An essential part of freedom of speech is the freedom to say something that is wrong.

Right. I agree completely.

But the freedom to say something wrong doesn't mean the freedom from its consequence.

Just ask Natalie Maines.

In a sane world, the consequence of Lott's silly remark would have been nonexistent. It's PC that blows it up out of all proportion.

btw, the Hollywood left is whining about that very thing. They're saying that they have the right to say whatever they want without consequence, apparently not aware that the American public also has the freedom to reject their product because of what they say.

Trent Lott just suffered the logical consequence of saying something wrong.

I don't know about that. It sounded very much like he was supporting segregation in his silly remark, and he didn't clearly state his views for days afterward.

Granted, if he were a liberal, it would have blown over. But since he was a Republican, and we live by higher standards of decency and honor, he suffered the appropriate consequence for what he said.

The inequity of how liberals are treated and what they get away with that Republicans are held accountable for, IMO, is the real issue......not free speech, nor a world gone mad with political correctness.

What Lott said was NOTHING!

on the other hand.........

What FReepers here said and did to him and what the writers wrote and what President Bush said was disgusting, now that is the facts!

It sure made me see that SOME republicans are just as bad as the rats. I sure woke up to the facts about that last December.

Now I will never be a blinded follower of Bush or the republican party EVER.........any party that brings in the patriot Act and bans guns and thinks a socialist CLINTON LOVER(BLAIR) and a commie (PUTIN) is good is never to be trusted in my book.

Instead REPUBLICANS NEED their feet held to the FIRE even more than the rats...with the rats we know they are bad with republicans you never know when they will be bad and vote liberal pass laws that are against the constitution or just plain side with commies.

Until Frist gets some back bone along with many other republicans in the senate the whole bunch of them are getting what they deserve. Any party that would be so spineless after a fantastic 2002 election win last November deserve to be treated just like the RATS..........

Now, aristeides and I were having a very civil and productive discussion, and you came on with your name calling and nastiness (and verified the observations I made about your unpleasant behavior previously).

It is impossible to communicate when you butt in, Todd, because you haven't learned the first thing about civil discourse.

Please stay out of this unless you can control yourself.

Why don't you ask PhiKapMom's opinion of me and if she thinks I am a divider of the GOP since she might be able to set you stright.

Unlike you, I don't need other people's opinions or words to decide what I think.

TLB has been one of the few Freepers that has been calling it like it truly is whether some of you like it or not.

Just so we'll know where we all stand, this is what TLBSHOW believes.

Bush is a traitor
Bush is in bed with terrorists
Bush is a U.N. man
Bush is a commie
Bush is a liberal
Bush is just like Bill Clinton
Bush is not pro-life
Bush is promoting the gay agenda
Bush is anti-Constitution
Bush is anti-family
Bush is a liberal
Bush is a fake president
Bush is a gun grabber

Those are HIS words, not something we made up.

I don't believe any of that.

I started to respond to your post, point by point, but realized, quickly, it was turning into a book...lol. So I decided to just ask a few questions.

1)Do you think that because people disagree with you re: MSNBC, Blair, Putin, the U.N. or Todd, that you are being personally attacked? You seem quite angry that some have disagreed with you. If some have personally attacked you, I agree, that is wrong. But simply challenging another's opinion is NOT a personal attack, imo.

2)Do you think that when a person posts opinions that are CONSISTENTLY critical of the GOP or President Bush, that this is helpful to achieving our goals in 2004?

I, personally, have not seen any supporters of this administration who blindly follow lock-step behind an icon.

What I HAVE seen is disagreement with specific issues or stances, WITHOUT the need to state the following (and I can provide sources should you require them):

Bush is a traitor Bush is in bed with terrorists
Bush is a U.N. man
Bush is a commie
Bush is a liberal
Bush is just like Bill Clinton
Bush is not pro-life
Bush is anti-Constitution
Bush is anti-family
Bush is a liberal
Bush is a fake president
Bush is a gun grabber

Now......this is all from the same poster. How is this helpful? And I can assure you that in each of those instances, debate was not possible. Questions went unanswered. Facts went unresponded to. Instead....an accusation of 'smearing' was made. And this is MULTIPLE people asking...questioning. Not just some cabal.

I am really interested in seeing your opinion. I agree that diversity of opinion is good. I do NOT agree that, just like on this thread, if I state MY opinion that Blair has been courageous and a good friend to us during this war, that *I* am now a socialist....or a lover of liberal commie rats. What say you?
