Prior to the invasion, Saddam accused Kuwait of secretly drilling 'diagonally' so that they would tap into Iraq oil. Kuwait was also guilty of manipulating the price of oil for the sole purpose of causing economic pain to Iraq. Saddam then placed his army at the border, declared that the negotiations failed and there was no reason to give Kuwait any more time to correct their behavior and then invaded Kuwait.
