LAW ENFORCEMENT sources told NBC News that Peterson was arrested Thursday night at the Torrey Pines golf resort in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla. He was held overnight and was being transported Friday afternoon back to Modesto.

Peterson was reported to have moved to the San Diego area after his wife vanished. Peterson’s parents refused to comment when contacted at their home in Solana Beach, a suburb of San Diego.

Law enforcement officials would not specify what charges had been lodged or which agency had made the arrest, but authorities in Modesto, about 80 miles south of Sacramento, scheduled a news conference for 9:15 p.m. ET to announce a “significant change” in the investigation.<>snip it
