If a gal is conservative, she's not going to mind you being conservative, too. If she has a problem with it, don't pursue. Just save yourself some misery and don't. One date won't kill you.

Curiously enough, my wife and I never really "dated" that much before we knew we were right for each other. In fact, the first time I met my (now) wife, it was among a group of friends we had in common.

I had long since made it a point to honestly just be me, so when Marie asked me what I was doing later that day, I just smiled and said, "I'm going to down to the shooting range and make the world safe from paper targets. Join me?"

To her credit, she did. And our first "date" was me giving her lessons on how to handle a .45 ACP semi-auto handgun. (Or so she let me believe...later I learned that she was the daughter of a U.S. Marine and was no stranger to firearms.)

Bottom line: there's a lot of wisdom in the old line, "Just be yourself." Because eventually, you're going to have to be yourself with the one you choose to share your life with.

-Jay

Plectrums have a better sound, than tenors do. Five strings can be played " classically " ( original banjo music ), or the " country " sort. A plectrum's neck is thinnner than a five string's, though as long; if not longer, when an " extended " neck is used.Plectrum players do NOT play the " classical ", notr " country " banjo music. They play early teens -'30s, Dixieland , and classical to pop music, as do tenor players.

More than a wee bot off topic;however, since this thread is about dating, let me just say that my husband's plectrum banjo playing,is part of his charm and also one of the many reasons I married him.His being brilliant and a Conservative; not to mention adorable, didn't hurt any either. :-)

I never object to education. Thanks for the information.

Incidentally, I got into banjo through being a slide guitar player - lots of similar tunings. I never really worried about whether a song was appropriate for the instrument - I just played the durn thing. I'm currently working on "A Whiter Shade of Pale."

A very cool banjo page, with MP3's, may be found here.

I'm unfamiliar with that sing and suspect it is something current. Yes ?

Modern banjos sound dreadful; even the expensive ones. Banjos, from they " GOLDEN ERA " are expensive to HUGELY expensive and are mostly in collectors' hands. Most, except for the lowest grades are works of art, the likes of which, you probably have not seen nor heard.

Don't worry, except for some strange peopel, most banjo players think the same way you do and find almost NO music out of sync with playing on a banjo. :-)

Thanks for the link. FREEPmail me, anytime, you want to talk about the banjo. If I can't can't help you, I'll get my husband to; he's the expert and a world wide recognized one, at that.

Funny article and a lot of it true. I'm about to marry a great woman but one who votes Democrat basically for one reason: abortion. I'm convinced that the great majority of women who vote Dem do so for this reason far above all other reasons.

My fiancee has a daughter who just got her law degree from U-Minnesota. Guess what her party affiliation is and who her political hero is? Clue: it ain't Republicans or Antonin Scalia. Plus she was a big fan of Wellstone and had friends who worked for his campaign. She knows all the liberal Dem buzzwords and talking points and as well as the usual feminist terminology. She wants to get married though, but her liberal boyfriends are turning out to be unfaithful scuzzballs. Can you imagine that? By the way did you know that the recently elected governor of Minnesota Tim Pawlenty is a crook? Why I never would have known that if she hadn't told me. (snicker, snicker)

Nevertheless these are very good people just politically obtuse. Actually my fiancee resembles Libertarians more in her beliefs than Democrats. But she had never heard of Libertarians before I told her about them. Give me time; I'll convert her to the GOP eventually. But even if she votes Libertarian like she did in one local election last November, it beats voting for Dems.

Irish folk music sounds great on a tenor banjo. Mick Moloney is an Irish traditional musician who is a whiz on it as well as mandolin. Go to the Milwaukee Irish Fest in August, and you'll hear some fabulous music played on the tenor banjo. And yes, I play one myself. I play for my own amazement.

There are many Banjo rallies, throughout the USA; almost one a month...if not more. You may want to think about looking into those, if it isn't just Irish music, that you enjoy.I could send you some info, if you're interested. :-)

Nothing wrong with playing for your own joy. Do you play an old or a new tenor ?

I don't live anywhere near Milwakee, but thanks for the info, nonetheless.

I play a banjo I picked up cheap at a rummage sale and then put in the closet for ten years. I recently began playing it after hearing how good Irish music sounded on it. The brand name of it is "Aida". I have no idea how old it is or where it was made. The g string doesn't sound too good, and I'm looking for a better banjo although it is acceptable for personal use. I don't need an expensive one, just one that sounds better than this one. I play other instruments and know a number of music stores in the Midwest where they sell tenor banjos as well as a wide variety of other folk instruments. Elderly Music in Lansing, Michigan is great for new and used folk instruments.

I'm not the same Bernard that wrote this article, but I am Bernard, and I live in the Chicago area. (Born and raised a Daley Democrat and Catholic).

I met my wife at a party for divorced Catholics on May 23, and we were married June 25. The jury is still out on whether it will last, becuase it will only be 23 years this June.

Anyway, I don't remember discussing politics with her at all before we got married. Later, we found out we agree on many political things, but that was just part of the overall comfort we felt with each other about life in general.

Chicago is a big place, and the author needs to look in other parts of the area to find what he's looking for. Good luck, Bernard!

Good advice in your above #115.

As an aside, sex is basically friction and fantasy. True love is sharing one's life with a conservative spouse. :-))

(btw, we married young, 22 and 19, but have remained so for the last 33 years.)

A Conservative Man's Rules For Marrying A Liberal Woman. (If Love Overpowers Sense & Sensibility). As a single guy, I fall very much under that category. What's a good guy supposed to do but keep his mouth shut? ;-) Oh and yes, don't discuss money and sex with women either if you're looking forward to be hitched and saying your I Do's down the road.
