Ugh! I'll never forget the sinkmeister's noodle salutes. I found this old Nightline interview with Anthony Lake, chairman of the Nat'l Security Council (ugh, again):
"...George Stephanopolous writes in his book that the president's early salutes looked different, and his fingers drooped, and there was a concern that it wasn't snappy enough, and that they had a discussion about who would teach him how to salute. George hadn't been in the military. They thought it would be inappropriate for the vice president. And so you [Lake] were chosen."
It also discusses that the meister didn't WANT his salutes to be too crisp, lest he look gung-ho to his Hollywood friends.
