i keep cooledit open all the time ready to record wav's of bagcam reporters, I caught some of his report before they cut away to centcom; the part where he said an artillery detachment was on the scene during the sniper fight earlier and they were the ones who deployed and captured the snipers; good job.

I don't have TV, so I never saw it with my own eyes, but from what you all described, vs. what Dr. Arnot just described, I would say YES, it was the same place. Wasn't it Dr. Arnot who was out there the first time you all saw it? I think that's what he said... that he had seen this happen the day before, and that the Marines went back out there today... He mentioned people yelling down to water, that the prisoners were BELOW the water, and that the Marines went out and got them out somehow... he talked so fast and I was trying to type, so I missed some details, so I don't know if he said they DUG them out, or what.

I hope that's what he was referring to. Those people were desperate.
_______________

A good story in the Washington Post:
Marine get Civics 101-lesson:

"The new "mayor" of Katarrah, a bustling commercial and residential neighborhood in central Baghdad, is a 29-year-old Marine lieutenant from Totowa, N.J., named Adam Macaluso."

I also saw on the news an hour ago, some video of a US (soldier/marine) talking with an Iraqi at a water plant. The US troop asked him if he could get enough people out to help him repair whatever damage there was "if we secure you". The Iraqi guy was quite guarded, and didn't seem to understand, so the US guy repeats it, again emphasizing "if we secure you." The Iraqi guy says sure, they can handle it, "if you allow us to." And the American says, enthusiastically, "Yes, we WANT you to." Ever so slowly... winning the hearts and minds.... we hope.

Before CENTCOM comes on, I want to make one last observation about those prissy press people who attend the daily briefings.

I think CENTCOM brilliantly set them up. In Desert Storm, the spotlight was on the daily briefs and scud attacks (i.e. behind the lines). Stormin' Norman was the shining star with his daily appearances before the press.

So this time, those wannabe reporters jumped at the chance to cover CENTCOM, thinking they would shine. Instead, CENTCOM deliberately made the daily brief a rehash of old news. The Pentagon understood that -- with embed reporters AND instant communications thru the internet & full time cable news -- a morning press conference would be no more than a recap.

I think Gen. Brooks has been brilliant...he's carried this off with grace and dignity. But those reporters in the audience got snookered...and they know it.

Way to go, Rummy!

Maybe they found some passageway in that hallway where the marines were walking through with the people and opening doors. I remember they couldn't find anything then, but the people were too frantic not to believe.

Gen. Brooks showing video of Americans and Iraqis putting out oil well fires. Spec Ops are supporting land components in Baghdad. Also helping Baghdad residents.

2 brothers approached Spec OPs asking for medicine for sister with cancer. Were given what medicine they had to help. Pictures shown while story being told.

Local Fox channel this morning reporting that rescued POW Ronald Young, apache helicopter pilot, told his mother that the last few days they came across some people who treated them well. The rest of the time was "not too good." Also, CNN producer and guard were slightly injured in the shootout at Tikrit.

Good story, thanks! Here is a cute excerpt from the story, in reference to a town meeting the young Marine had set up:

At such meetings, which have taken place throughout the city over the past few days, miscommunications are commonplace. One Marine captain said he was shocked when an Iraqi man leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek. At another meeting, a resident pulled out a pistol during a discussion. "Next time you might want to leave that in the car," the Marines told him.

I just wonder if some of the looters are agents sent from Syria and surrounding countries trying to destabilize the country. I know they are sent to be snipers and do suicide bombings. I am watching anti-war protester idiots on local Fox. They are the ones who deserve to live under Saddam.
