Senator puts his charitable image on auction block

U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry, who was scorched in his 1996 campaign for making only piddling donations to charity, apparently hasn't gotten any more generous since deciding he wanted to become president.

At a recent charity event for Holy Name Parish School in West Roxbury, Kerry was among a slew of politicians, businesses and others who chipped in items for a ``Reach for the Stars'' auction.

Most of the pols and corporate bigwigs donated expensive dinners, tickets or other valuable items for the auction, which raised money for science and reading textbooks.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino graciously submitted an exclusive catered dinner at the Parkman House. U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) offered a personal tour of the White House and a lunch in the House member's dining room - an item valued as ``priceless'' by auction organizers.

City Councilor John Tobin came through with a coveted pair of Red Sox tickets in the new Green Monster seats. U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and the Stenger family offered a painting by Kennedy of his boat, ``The Maya.''

Other auction items included Celtics tickets, a round of golf at the prestigious Country Club in Brookline and a weekend at a Nantucket inn.

So what did Kerry offer?

An 8 x 10 autographed photo - of himself.

The winning bid was a grand total of $18, according to sources. That would pay for about one chapter of a textbook.

``It was either the signed photo or personal guitar lessons from Sen. Kerry,'' said Kerry spokesman Kyle Sullivan. ``We thought the photo had more value.''

The really funny thing is that there was not a single Kerry constituent willing to help him out by going over $18.00.

This reminds me of when Hillary! donated Bubbas used underwear to charity, and then took the tax deduction. Of course, who knew at the time that the residual DNA on the underwear would have wound up being so valuable!

" BOSTON -- They have argued about the deficit and bickered about health care, but Sen. John Kerry and Gov. William F. Weld now have stumbled onto a stickier, more personal issue: the comparative goodness of their hearts.

In their second U.S. Senate debate, held Monday, the two men wrangled over their record of charitable contributions. It was a surprising development, given that the two are scions of wealthy Yankee families.
When Sen. Kerry released his latest tax returns in April, he reported no charitable contributions. He later said it was a mistake and he would file an amended return showing several thousand dollars worth.

A review of his returns between 1990 and 1995 found that he had earned $742,042 and donated $4,869 -- 0.7 percent of his income -- to charity.

Gov. Weld, a millionaire by virtue of his family's and wife's wealth, went on to slam Sen. Kerry as the kind of politician who would rather spend someone else's money -- their tax dollars -- than his own.

"Maybe it's just a stylistic thing, but it's a difference between him and me," Gov. Weld said after a debate panelist raised the issue. "I've regularly given something like 15, sometimes 20 percent of my income to charity. I'm not saying everybody should do that."

Sen. Kerry responded that because for several years he was a divorced father of two school-age daughters, he couldn't afford to be a philanthropist. He accused Gov. Weld of taking a cheap shot.

"If you look at the tuitions for schools nowadays, and you look at the after-tax paycheck even on a very large check, you don't have a lot of leeway," he said yesterday at a campaign stop.

His argument has become clouded, however, by his marriage last year to millionairess Teresa Heinz. Heir to the Heinz ketchup fortune, her personal wealth is estimated at $760 million.

Sen. Kerry said Tuesday "that's her money, not mine," but there's a question whether the public will make that same distinction.
