Embedded reporters had to be unarmed. IIRC, battlefield journalists go unarmed. That's why they aren't legitmate "deliberate targets." I suppose there is a fine line, e.g. Geraldo carrying a sidearm, but not using it in a "combat fashion." Once journalists act as soldiers (actually worse, because they aren't wearing a uniform), the whole lot of them is put to a new risk.
In this case, CNN ran a check point and fired at the enemy while doing so. Now, if I was a Red Cross worker, and some butt-head ran a check point, and fired at the enemy while using a Red Cross ambulance, I'd be some kind of upset.
CNN's actions put all the other journalists at additional risk. Doesn't surprize me that CNN would go out on it's own to drum up a story, and "to hell with everyone else" in the process.
