I was wondering, since the sons-in-law were out of the country, why couldn't Jordan privately warn them? They could have just stayed out of the country and no one in Iraq would have been the wiser, right?

I remember well the story when they went back to Iraq and were murdered...it was creepy.

The bottom line is that they could have been warned or CNN could have leaked it to another news agency to report on it, but they didn't. Reporting the threat would likely have prevented it from happening. I know, the translator might be at risk....some tough calls weren't made.
