I think you are right. They see themselves as the truthseekers who are going to expose the President and Rummy to the rest of the world. They can't except that maybe, just maybe, that the President and Rummy are telling us the truth.

I recall a desultory approach in the previous "administration". If they felt obliged to address a topic that might reflect negatively on it, one question would suffice, and they would "move on", with admonishments to us that the "American People" loved bill clinton and didn't want him bothered with all of that nonsense.
