Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help!  If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

To all who helped this get started and keep it running, thank you!

Special thanks to Null and Void for keeping these threads running on the weekends, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, Ragtime Cowgirl for her Exclusive Live Transcription Service™, Fledermaus for his 15 minutes of fame, and, of course, Belly Girl...

I don't know, Miss M., Sean's gone a little over the top, too. I think it's a control issue. Some seem to need to run the war, rather than trust those in charge. Some think that finding fault is honorable in wartime. I suggested that Sean spend some time with Ollie. I don't think he got the message. (^: When real heroes are on TV daily, puffed up pundits and pols and generals appear rather silly, imho.

Col. Robert Woods, Jr., Memorial for fallen soldiers, Ft. Bliss, TX: "It is a tradition that is honorable... All of us know that life in our Army is both rewarding and very challenging, day in and day out."  Boots, helmets, rifles and ID tags displayed here today....that is part of the tradition. We salute who we respect. We should salute them for their sense of duty...in a cause that was necessary and difficult...for the respect they had for one another, on and off the battlefield....for their integrity..for staying sincere until their very end...and last, but not least we should salute them for their courage... God bless our loved ones, their families and their friends. Hoo-ah!"

Five members of the 507th are still being held as POWs.

This memorial service, with its clunky piano and earnest singing is the face of America. I am tearing up.

Here's a concise history of the Kurds/Turks conflict [ABC News caveat]:

Kurds Fight for Homeland

Q :   What is the legal status of Kurds in Turkey?
A :   Kurds are not recognized as a minority — unlike Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians and Jews. Recognized minorities have the right to teach in their respective languages.

Q :   What rights do Kurds have in Turkey?
A :   A ban imposed by Turkey’s last military government on the use of Kurdish in unofficial settings was lifted in 1991, but Kurdish is illegal in broadcasts, educational or political settings. A court case to ban Turkey’s main pro-Kurdish party is under way.

Q :   When did the Kurdish independence movements begin?
A :   Kurds were promised a homeland in the 1920 Treaty of Sevres, which carved up Turkey after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, fought to regain the land, destroying plans for a Kurdish state. There have been numerous Kurdish revolts since.

Q :   When was the Kurdish Workers Party, or PKK, created and what are its aims?
A :   The PKK was established in 1978 and turned to armed struggle in 1984. Originally fighting for independence, the group now says it aims for an autonomous Kurdish state or a federation with Turkey.

Q :   What’s the toll of the conflict?
A :   Close to 37,000 people have died. The PKK has waged a guerrilla war in the southeastern mountains and carried out attacks in western Turkey and Europe.
The Marxist sites that I visited support the PKK.

You are correct, the PKK is Marxist, the PUK is not. Per my Kurd corner grocer.

I thought it was a new day for Russia. My thoughts continue to go back to the moment at Crawford High School. Maybe I'm naive but that day appeared to turn years of distrust and animosity into a viable working relationship.

Maybe Putin has changed, but the regime that he represents are still stuck in the Cold War era waiting for an opportunity to settle a few scores.

The old Europe mentality. And yes, he did choose poorly.

Americans are learning that such people exist - these clean-scrubbed, compassionate and courageous people - throughout our country. Americans won't soon forget.

I feel like I need a decontamination bath after visiting those sites. LOL! But am learning about the continual repression of the Kurds by their neighbors. And the bitter rivalry between the PKK, PUK, and KDP.

Something I have noticed watching the looters..

Why are the Iraqi's pushing an out of gas car or truck up to the building they are looting .....then loading it up with their booty....then pushing it back home.

Wouldn't it be easier to loot some gas first??
