Money becomes the source of all higher thought. Instead of sending prayers, we're asked to send money. I find it offensive.

If you don't want to send money to a trust fund, don't.

Some people on this forum bitch about....every....little....thing.

When you get your own television show, you can NOT ask for donations to a trust fund.

I am ashamed of the comments on this thread..... the guy left three little girls and a wife. How many of you would have done what he did. Big talkers here.... try a little sympathy and humility.... at a minimum the guy was a brave American. All those that have participated in this war and all other wars deserve our respect and admiration.

Russert himself said of Bloom's death , "The war comes home."

These people really do live in a different world, don't they?

The "I'd rather" in my post referred to "as opposed to giving to a news guy" -- I did not mean "as opposed to giving to Marines and cops' kids."

I have already contributed to Marine and other military families, and will most certainly continue to do so.

Not that I need to explain this all to you.

AH! Cool! I have loved that name since I saw that film (I am a HUGE Cary Grant fan- just see my profile) and I'd LOVE to name my kid Hildy! It's a great name! It has a lot of character to it. You lucky thing you. ;-D

My hubby and I were stunned when we saw this on O'Reilly.

Nothing against David Bloom - we liked him very much, and feel great sympathy for his family.

Having said that, our first thought was, "What about the families of our brave servicemen and women who were killed in the line of duty?" Their salaries and benefits were miniscule compared to what David Bloom's were from NBC.

Who is going to pay for the college education for these children of our brave troops? David Bloom didn't have to go to Iraq. Our troops, although they volunteered to join the military, once they enlisted, had no choice as to where they were going to be deployed.

It's not about "some people" bitching, it's about someone with a huge salary, who's friends receive HUGE salaries setting up a fund for donations. As someone else stated, those friends (Russert for one) acted like he was killed in combat.. he wasn't.

This is very tacky. He worked for a billion-dollar corporation, was paid handsomely and was undoubtedly well-insured by the company.

Solicting from the public is unseemly.

Several days ago I read that Lloyds of London was doubling the premium for insurance for the embedded journalists. It went from something like $10K per week to $20K per week.

The question is, who is the beneficiary? Is it the network, or the family. I suspect that much of it goes to the family.

By the way, have you seen the recent Red Cross begging for money, based on the war? At the same time we hear that they have hundreds of millions left over from 9/11.

Well, take it from me, it's a great name. I always know when people are referring to me! Did you know that the original Hildy Johnson was a man? There have been so many versions of this story. In 1931 Hildy (Hildebrand) Johnson was played by Pat O'Brien. In 1974, Jack Lemmon played the part. There were so many others in between. Rosalind Russell was the only woman to play Hildy.

IMO, I think it's a perfectly decent thing to do. However, I suspect most journalists only make contributions to the DNC.

To be asking for money while young men with young families are being killed in the line of duty, I think, it tacky.

Good idea ... Let's all write O'Reilly and suggest he set up a fund for the families of the servicemen killed in Iraq. Bump for email...

You are not going to get me to feel ashamed. There is always an emotional tug. That is why it is so offensive. They are users, pure users. You should try and get past the manipulative tug and see what is being done here. They have all the money or access to people who do, and instead of that, they try to use the guy's celebrity and sad story to wrench some dough from people who cannot afford it. I'm sorry, if you cannot see how this is wrong, we will just have to disagree.

The others who think it so important to tell us that we have the right not to give, just are clueless. Give us the consideration to see what we are talking about.

I totally agree, it's not only tacky, but stupid.

I missed the end of O'Reilly because my husband turned on MSNBC during an ad and we caught Olberman doing this horrible attack on Geraldo. He was showing video of soldiers shaking hands with Geraldo, he said that they had all requested to shake Geraldo's hands after having put their hands offensive places and that they still got the bad end of the deal. I was so disgusted with MSNBC that I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

OH don't even remind me! Hildy Santo-Tomas is my LEAST favorite designer on that show. What a bea-bea AND she stuck STRAW on the wall as a design. NO way someone that dorky could be named after one of my favorite movie characters. ;-D

Of course it's bitching. It's gossipy tut-tutting and sanctimonious grousing.

If you don't want to give, don't.

I don't find it any less grating than O'Reilly pimping his books and "Factor Stuff."

Which I don't find grating at all.

You guys sound like Democrats: "Where's the money for everybody else?

"This isn't FAAAIIIIIRRRR!"

Whatever helps people handle grief is OK by me. Bloom's associates want to express some lasting memorial to him, and they think a trust fund for his kids is the way to do it. And, they'd like to open it to anybody who might have been a fan.

I don't see a thing wrong with it.
