No, there were shrapnel/flying chips of rock and dirt visible on the camera from nearby bullets, then it tipped over.

First impacts were a little low, then the gunner (from where ?) aimed higher and higher until camera tipped over.

I saw the replay of that...definitely saw exactly what you saw. Gravel flying up in a trail closer and closer to the camera...then crash!
