If you thought your child was still alive, (assuming that the sick pedophile kidnapper cared about her, because he let her go back for her shoes--I suppose the profilers told the parents/family to not intimiate or infuriate the kidnappers cuz they could hurt the daughter...)...I'd venture to guess you'd say ANYTHING.

From the beginning the Smart's seemed to be trying to follow a script made for them by LE. Some of the family were better than others at getting their part's right.

The one's that couldn't get the message across were dropped and finally we saw the the same few Smart family member's that could follow the script.

I don't think Tom was following his script and got himself off in wonderland somewhere. JMO.
