Mitchell was never "invited into the Smart home." He came there for five hours, one afternoon, and worked on top of the roof of the house WITH ED SMART. That was the extent of his "help." Period
Apparently, this distinction is very important to you.
At any rate, I was talking about lessons I learned, not implying anything about Ed Smart.
No body enters through my front gate unless he is invited.
Whether the person stays at my front porch, at my house roof, or comes down to drink water at my patio area is still too close for comfort, having children running around the yard.

I would not have done what the Smarts did, either, but I live in Houston, TX, not Salt Lake City, UT.
Years ago, I lived in "L.A." (that's "lower Alabama" for the uninformed) and no one locked their cars, no one locked their doors or windows.
Different "rules" apply in different places. I am sure that a lot of people changed their habits after Elizabeth was grabbed.
