NASA Posts New Mars Images

Fri April 4, 2003 11:01 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sand dunes that look like the scales of a giant fish and rare, wispy clouds are among more than 11,000 new images of Mars posted on the Internet, NASA said on Friday.

The photographs, which scientists will examine to glean new clues about how much water there is on Mars and where, are posted atgallery msss.

They were taken by the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor.

"The new batch, taken between February and July 2002, brings the total number of images in the online gallery to more than 123,800," NASA said in a statement.

MGS, orbiting Mars since 1997, has provided valuable insights that have helped planetary experts and geologists to conclude that liquid water may exist just under the surface of Mars. That is important news for future explorers as well as to scientists trying to understand the Red Planet's dynamics.

"Indeed, there remain new discoveries to be made about the history of water, climate variability, and character of future landing sites from the continuing flow of images, spectra, and related measurements from the Global Surveyor," said James Garvin, NASA's lead scientist for Mars Exploration.

"Without the new perspectives provided by MGS, the critical scientific and engineering assessment of potential landing sites for the Mars Exploration Rovers would not have been possible."

Fish scales were evolved to take advantage of some types of boundary layer phenomena. These dunes are no doubt formed as a result of similar shear layer / fluid flow properties. The geometry of these dunes as well as the fish scales shows a similarity to two-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting waves. Tollmien-Schlichting waves are a transitional boudary layer phenomenon.

At least that's my take.

There are a lot of things about Mars, and the Cydonia region, that are just not very easy to dismiss out of hand. IMO, Hoagland is really way out there in the ozone on a lot of things, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

An old friend of my family did contracting work for the air force and NASA for most of his life said something interesting about some of the Art Bell type stuff that was flooding the airwaves around the time that the whole Roswell thing was all over the TV. He said "99% of all of this is horse-shit...but the other 1% could re-write a lot of history and physics books."

Really?

I had a bunch of them running around in the back of my refrigerator once, back where the old chinese food containers were.

The most amazing thing is the cold didn't seem to slow them down much.

70 million more years is about when Simon & Schuster can expect The Hidebeast's first draft on the 8 million dollar book deal she signed almost 3 years ago.

Hoagland was talking about water on europa long time ago(1),also about water underground in mars(2),both nasa did not mention until this year.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to take anything away from him. A lot of the great scientists were riddiculed mercilessly for claiming that the world was round, the Earth is not the center of the universe and neither is the Sun.
