He has the right to ideas. And the university has the right to fire him. If he'd said something nasty about one of their pet causes, they'd exercise that right and everybody knows it.

I don't know that they have a "right" to fire him. As I said, there may well be labor law involved here, as well as collective bargaining agreements.
I think this is a self-defeating cause. If we aren't fighting for the right to speak one's mind, then why the heck ARE we fighting?
