Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:
To all who helped this get started and keep it running, thank you!
Special thanks to An.American.Expatriate for staring the daily threads, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, Ragtime Cowgirl for her Exclusive Live Transcription Service, and, of course, Belly Girl...

"... the media invested heavily in run-up to it. They wanted it more than just about anyone."
***
For most people, it seems, memories of Viet Nam begin with the draft, or the build-up, or the Tet offensive or even the anti-war movement.
I was following politics in th early 60s - not a Kennedy supporter! - and remember a media drumbeat of several years of reporting about the unrest in South Viet Nam. When Kennedy was president, we had 'observers' over there and the media were constantly whining why we (America) did not DO SOMETHING. They showed regularly on TV, all the hardships caused by the ruling party (Catholics) as the Buddhists set themselves on fire in the middle of Saigon.
It occurred to me then that the media were stirring up the political stew out of boredom, and that political and war correspondents were much more invested in seeing Action in Viet Nam than the Kennedy administration was.
Kennedy died, Johnson took over, the Tonkin Incident happened and everybody knows the rest.
I will always believe that a lot of the blame for the chain reaction that led to the terrible losses of our brave servicemen lies at the feet of bored journalists.

I don't have as much stuff as you....28.6 GB hard drive; Intel Celeron (I know, that's not great, either), 192 MB ram....oh well, I'll get a better one some day. This is better than nothing. : )

From NRO's The Corner
About latest Weekly World News Issue
"From the "Weekly World News": AL QAEDA'S NEW FLATULENCE WEAPON! "CIA analysts have gotten wind of a bizarre new terrorist plot: Al Qaeda sleeper agents in the U.S. plan to kill thousands of innocent American civilians by breaking wind with toxic fumes!" The story goes on to say that Iraqi scientists have developed a new variety bean impregnated with a deadly airborne virus. A CIA expert is quoted giving signs of a possible attack. The last is that, "when confronted, the suspect denies breaking wind and may even point the finger of blame at someone else." The truest thing in the story is that the CIA, given its recent record, probably is looking into it."

foxnews.com has a breaking news headline saying that heavy artillery is shaking the area near the airport. Now is that our incoming, or their outgoing?

I assume from this banter that nothing has happened since I left. We went downtown for the International Festival. I actually got handed some Islamic tracts while I was there. Great, Now they are getting evangelical.

I would be shelling us if I were them. But they have to accept some return fire PLUS air responses that will destroy them.
