Dixie Chick Natalie Maines Now Claims Anti-Bush Comment Only A "Joke" (Desperation Time)

Dixie Chick Natalie Maines told a New Zealand TV reporter last week that her now-infamous slam at President George W. Bush was a joke. Maines admitted that she told a London concert audience that the group was ashamed that the President is from their home state of Texas, but added, "It was a joke and it wasn't planned. And it was really funny at the time. It got lots of cheers, and that's what it was meant for. You see the trouble that you can get into if you speak religion or politics. It gets people very upset." Maines issued a written apology after making the remark, but some over sensitive U.S. stations continued to ban the Chicks' music. Wonder if theyre still getting lots of play on radio Bagdhad?

I agree that Natalie is unimportant as are her comments. I'd rather we take our frustations out on De Genova, Madonna, Moran and others who have made far, far more offensive comments. They went over the line of free speech.
I defended Johnny Rocker, Trent Lott (whom I don't much liked), the teacher who was forced to apologize for something she didn't even say, and others who have been attacked by the PC supporters. Now I feel obligated to defend the Dixie Chicks (the other two have said nothing) even when I don't agree with them.
Also, I recall once trying to make a joke which came out terrible wrong. In no way did I mean it. I guess that is why I'm not as hard on her.

Unfortunately, I checked e-bay & their tickets are selling just fine. That's too bad. Maybe the instances I heard about were isolated. Unless, as someone mentioned, the ticket-holders aren't going there to cheer them.

>>"Why liars??? Well, which story/statement is true? They 'APOLOGIZE'... or they're PROUD OF WHAT WAS SAID?"
Depends on who's asking and what country they are in.
Kinda hurts when you scratch beneath the surface huh?

I can, there IS an effort to stop the careers of Susan S and the others. We at least know what they are because what they said before all this started. They are Hollywood. As far as Nat. is concerned she was found to be not as she appeared and she denies what she said and is waffling on what to do about it. The Blixi chic's target market is more conservitive than the Hollywood crowd. They have more to lose. I think it surprised most people. At least Hollywood has been consistant on what they say. The ditsy chicks keep digging their hole when they say one thing one place and another thing another place.

I dont believe that it was a joke.
This is not about free speech. Many of us can disagree with the war, and we are free to do so.
I have no problems with anyone who supports or disagrees with whether we should go to war or not, based on knowledge and principles. I wish I could defend the Chicks, but I cant. It was not their freedom to disagree that I think was wrong.
Her comments were distastefull, inappropriate, non-productive, not educational, out of place, disrespectful, a personal attack, and served no good purpose.

I was seeing this as her handlers spining this into a "banned" or "censored" publicity stunt. Once something is banned, all the kids want to buy it. The managers do not understand country music, what the 70+% of the country feels about the war, and freedom of contrary speech.

It lists the top albums, songs etc.
Home is still listed as the #1 country album. BUT I believe that is sales to retail stores NOT sales to end country music consumers. HOME is going to end up in the bargain bin soon after the concerts start/finish.

". Natalie Maines is a stone cold idiot for not knowing even the first thing about her main fan base"
Well, she doesn't know her "fan base" because she doesn't know what country music is.
This "new country" is actually a new category invented by musicians who couldn't make it in rock, and listened to by young white people who don't like rap.
However, they do manage to tug some country fans along with them...I mean you tell some people that the Rolling STones are country, and you tell them long enough, then they attract fans.
Anyway, she has pooped in their mess-kit, and if I was one of the other two, I'd be sueing her to hell and back for depriving me of a livlihood. Who knows, maybe that will happen.

>Lie. She made the comment thinking it would endear her (and the Dixie Chicks) to the audience. No other thought process occurred.
Seems I recall these sluts doing the White House (and maybe doing Bill)during the Clinton dark days. If so, it just comes natural for Clintonistas and is all justified as the end justifies the means, etc. ie: all's fair just to try to gain some ground on the the mean spirited, insensitive, out of touch, racist Republicans.

You forgot to post a warning sign.

I understand all that. And I think it's more than appropriate for people to decide whether or not they want to spend their money on them. What I don't find particularly good is the government getting involved, such as the State Senate that concocted some kind of bill and this all out campaign to ruin their careers. To be honest with you, her first apology was enough. It told us everything. She's sorry she said it,as the President should be respected, but she didn't back down from what she believes. And she has the right to believe what she believes. it almost sounded like she was willing to accept the consequences because of it. But now, they won't let up and that's what's forcing her to backtrack and I think that's wrong. I don't think her crime is fitting the punishment. Honestly.
