Some Jews write "G-d" to avoid the possible desecration of his name -- which could happen if someone prints out the thread and later decides to toss it in the garbage. Now, not everyone agrees with this or believes it is necessary -- i.e. some avoid just writing the Hebrew name. That being said, however, I don't see why it is necessary to ridicule a practice whose intended purpose is to show some respect to the name of our creator.

Consider this:

And you shall not profane my holy name, but I will be hallowed among the people of Israel (Leviticus 22:32)

you shall tear down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and burn their Ashe'rim with fire; you shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy their name out of that place.
You shall not do so to the LORD your God. (Deuteronomy 12:3-4)
