It does sound like there's a generator running in the background. The cam is being fed to the media pool, so everyone can get it.
Can't help you on the all-important American Idol issue, however.

The cam is being fed to the media pool, so everyone can get it. PMS and seeBS cam shots have been identical so I figured they were a shared feed but I believe there have been different views through other cams. Could be wrong.
