If you've been to Eastern Europe, you find that the countries that never really accepted Communism (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, for example) have recovered much more quickly than those that did (Romania, Bulgaria, for example). The Iraqis never really accepted Hussein (outside of Tikrit). They had a secular, active society before. I think they'll recover relatively quickly.
