CORRECTION - a COLONEL has been killed, not a general. Happened in Basrah.

More from CNN radio, but I'm not hearing these two stories very well. Anyone able to fill them in, please do
- Some terrorist group being hit by Brits & Special Forces. I couldn't get the name of the area, but may have sounded something like "sar al afran"
- We've been bombing a ridge somewhere sounding like "kalat" - a couple of bombs
- 21 T-55 tanks neutralized in Basra by air power.

Fox reporting explosions continue East and South of Baghdad.
UK fighers clashing with fighters south of Basra.

I've got BBC radio on & it keeps cutting out on me, can't make out half of what they are saying.

UK fighers clashing with fighters south of Basra. You'd think they'd have taken out all of them by now near Basra, where do they keep coming from? BBC radio is talking about it too, but it keeps fading out & I only get half the conversation. Very irritating!

patriciaruth pinged me to the following story, and some others have pinged big lists... it is a good read, but you may wish to skip directly to PIASA's edit in post 7 to save time...

ansar al islam? That's the al queda associated group near Mosul That's probably it... it is consistent with the rest of what I heard. Thanks.
Ah, right... that alQ group that none of the peaceniks believe exists - can't happen - alQ & Saadumb don't have anything in common ... I wonder if we are using non-existent bombs and troops to root them out? This is a similar situation to the chem/bio non-existence ... Bloody "useful idiots"...

Fox - Reuters now putting out bulletin about a 35-40 day pause. Not sure if this is the same "several week pause" mentioned earlier in the evening.

thanks for the ping to the 'Brits hit fuel depot" story.
As far as where the Basra fighters come from, it is a large city, I think near a million or maybe two, so it is no surprise that there is plenty of resistance there. It is taking some time, but not that much, it seems to me.
I heard yesterday that there may be an operation coming soon to "cut a corridor into the city" which would allow "humanitarian aid" to reach the good citizens there as well as to facilitate military operations.

The Monica Hat guy live is on CNN. He sounds like he was trained by Carville or Begala to spit out lies and distortions.
