[history]
There have been way too many vanities lately. The news forum is being overrun with them. We have been spending a lot of time moving them to the General Interest ("Chat") forum. With the increased volume we have seen with the war starting, we have been missing mail and other moderator duties, such as zots. So, here's some guidelines for vanities. Of course, there are exceptions to these guidelines. We have seen some great vanities.
Vanities are never posted in breaking news. Exceptions will be from valid news sources where breaking news is happening immediately. Such as 'CNN just reported Baghdad has been overrun by coalition forces'. Or, 'Fox reports that WMD have been discovered in Saddam's palace by embedded reporter'.
Your one line vanites, for the most part can be posted as a comment on an existing thread. If you want to post a one line vanity, post it in the chat forum. One line vanities consist of but are not limited to, 'Did you just hear that guy on KASD?'. Or, 'Does anyone know where that thread is about that women who said something about chemical weapons'. They will be deleted unless they are posted in the chat forum.
Most emails are not valid sources of news. Who knows where they originated from. They will be deleted unless they are posted in the chat forum.
Most humor threads should go to the chat forum, unless they are relevent to current events and news. Jokes and 'caption this' are also included. They will be deleted unless they are posted in the chat forum.
Freep this polls will be moved to chat depending on their revelance to current events.
Thanks for helping. Free Republic is growing faster than ever right now!
WHERE IS CHAT?
At the upper right hand side of the latest posts or latest thread, you will see a menu which looks something like this:
Campaign Central
General Interest (also known as 'chat')
News/Activism
Religion
RLC Liberty Caucus
The Smokey Backroom
VetsCoR
To post an article in any of these forums, just click on that forum, and post your article. They all work the same way.

It's not the bandwidth, it's clogging up the breaking news categories, of which I have been guilty.

Most of them are arm-chair generals trying to explain why we should surrender or why were getting our arse kicked.
I say, zot their poor excuse for a post and send them back to their parents basement with their comic books.

I've updated the main body of the thread. Please take a look and see if that answers your questions. Otherwise, I'll be here to clear up your questions.

Either that, or quit referring to it as chat. Many people, especially new members, have NO idea where to find the illusory Chat forum. I've been here since 1998, check this forum several times a day and I had no idea there was a chat forum.

I do not see any area labeled chat. Advice requested.
Agreed that there is a little "haze" on Freep. I've started a few threads with the idea of NOT being under 'breaking', and not seeing them under breaking, yet getting flack from the Illbays of the forum.
A one paragraph tutorial might just be in order.

For repeat offenders, I would suggest one warning then a ban for a determined time. Sit in a thinking corner for a while before being given posting rights.
My 2 pence.
I detest the clutter on my FR

AM's can't ban AM's, trust me, I tried. LOL!
To: Admin Moderator
Wellll....maybe one question, or it might be a suggestion. How about an "editorial" (aka vanity) forum, along with the general, smokey, etc. forums? Some vanities are really good and worthy of attention--but I'll admit a larger number of them are not.

Hey, I finally got a password for the Nupress name, but now if I start using it again, I'll miss any pings to Nuprez because that's what people are used to now. I guess I'll just have to miss them. You guys do me a favor and tell anyone trying to use the Nuprez name that she kicked the bucket and is using Nupress again, okay?
Maybe I should start a vanity...

Why, if you send something by car its called a ship-ment;
but if you send something by ship its called car-go?

I've only been hearing that for the last week with my son's homer simpson watch. I'm hoping the battery is not an energizer.

Thanks, we appreciate everyone's kind words and especially your patience. (not that we ever get crabby)

This reminds me of when our Pastor was makes announcements......He says..
"We are having way too much movement during the sermon, if you have to use the restroom, or have any other business to take care of, please do it now before the preaching starts."
For the next two to three weeks people are darting in and out of the service, cell phones are going off, kids are crying, etc.
To: John Robinson
Thank you for being such a sweetie and putting up with me.
[..ahem..] What are the chances I could Nuprez's April 10, 1998 "member since" date on this name? Is that possible? Do you know any computer software experts who could do that for me? [..tossing hair back..] I'm sure it would take someone who REALLY knows what they're doing, huh? Someone who really knows what they're doing.
You probably aren't even online right now to answer this question. Maybe I should start a vanity to ask people that question.
